My brother just bought me in Dubai a Dell Inspiron mini 12 which comes with a VISTA OS. I have not seen one yet here in Cebu. I have the following queries:

    1. Since this comes with a 1 gig ram, can this be upgraded?
    2. It comes with a VISTA OS, can I downgrade this to Windows XP? How?
    3. Is Windows 7 good for this?

Yung regarding sa # question mo. Pwede i downgrade sa XP yun pero mahirap. You need to download the Intel Matrix storage driver(SATA driver) install it before even starting the installation of XP. kasi for sure, pag XP CD lang ang ilalagay mu agad, Hindi nya madedetect yung HDD mo.

Sir i have the Windows XP Pro CD for Dell Laptop that is already pre-activated. We are able to integrate the intel matrix driver on the OS so no need to install it.

So taga Cebu ka sir? Layo pala. kung dito ka lang, pahiram ko sayo yun or burn kita ng copy.

if it's a netbook.. most likely wala siyang optical drive.. so you'll have to find an external optical drive connected through the usb..

you'll have to change some settings in the bios... i forgot which one.. will check my bios and post it later..

if you're thinking of installing orig licensed XP... medyo mahihirapan ka to source.. i think stop selling na ang MS ng XP since the support is already stopped... if ever may mabili, it would be those in the distribution system.. mga stocks ng mga dealers...

HIndi talaga recommended ng PC (either laptop, netbook or desktop) manufacturers na mag-downgrade from Vista to XP. It is even stated in their manual.

Problema nga lang, there are rumors that Vista itself will also be phased out. MS is going all out for Windows 7.0

    generally, yes. Up to 2gig

    2. It comes with a VISTA OS, can I downgrade this to Windows XP? How?
yes, but you have to download proper drivers for the devices on your netbook to work.

    3. Is Windows 7 good for this?
Current released of Win7 are still considered beta versions. I would rather wait for the official release before doing a Win7 install.

kung mahirap magdown grade to xp from vista with my laptop. then, conversely it is easy to upgrade it to windows 7. Am I right?

But since windows 7 is beta version pa lang. can anyone say when the final version will officially be released?

This is the second time I downgraded my Toshiba laptop from Vista Home Premium to XP Home.

I had the problem with the XP Home cd not finding the SATA hard drive. What I did is boot from a Western Digital (WD) hard drive utility cd* and formatted the hard drive via a WD utility. Once the hard drive has been formatted, the XP Home cd was able to locate it. When prompted if I want the hard drive formatted first, I just click "No".

*Typically included with boxed/retail WD internal hard drives.

It's not hard to downgrade from Vista to XP. It is important to get all the brand names and specific model for each device before starting anything. Other models of the same laptop brand or even different brands may have similar hardware (and similar drivers).

It didn't take too long for me to find XP drivers for my laptop.

As for drivers in Windows 7, Vista drivers should work fine. Other drivers work in both XP and Vista/Win7.

When I installed Win 7 Beta Build 7000 on my Toshiba laptop, I didn't have to lift a finger to install drivers. Every device had its proper driver installed correctly...... Not bad.

i don't think there is an official date yet but speculators say it should be between August and September of this year if microsoft is to have something good in it's product line for the remainer of the year.

That's great. so a direct upgrade from Vista to Win 7 got no hitches whatsoever. I hope its the same for dell laptops.

If I were the TS, I wouldn't touch the Dell mini without an extra PC on standby for dowloading drivers.

Desktop navigation with Win 7 Beta Build 7000 is the same or even slightly quicker than with XP. There were some quirkiness with file copying from hard drive to hard drive like with Vista. But, I heard that's been fixed with the latest Win 7 Build.

I have to stick with XP Home a bit longer because Tile Proxy (for FSX) acts weird with Vista/Win 7. I'll just wait until the retail Win 7 comes out before trying again.

Add: Performance with games between Vista and Win 7 were similar. So, there's still a slight hit when moving up from XP.

Also, the speedy desktop navigation with Win 7 Beta was with all graphics options enabled.

That laptop was once more downgraded to XP Home after Win 7 Beta. Since I already have the XP drivers from last time, it didn't take too long at all. The only hold up was first booting from the WD Hard Drive utility cd and formatting the SATA hard drive before proceeding with the XP install.

It's very important to have the correct device brand and exact model beforehand. That saves a lot of heartaches later.
