ALERT!

Last night, April 21, 2006, a laptop bought and registered in the name of my Mother, Dr. Karen L. Tamayo, was stolen at a conference in Tagaytay. It is an HP Pavilion ze4200, dark gray, DVD, CD-RW. The Windows XP is original and in her name.

It was stolen along with an LCD projector belonging to our school.

We've already been assured of the replacement of the laptop, but we'd like any information concerning suspicious persons selling such computers. We don't really care about the unit itself, but the data on the hard drive is irreplaceable, and worth a lot to us.

We'd be grateful for any help in recovering said HDD. The computer can go to the scrapyard, for all I care, but if we can recover that too, it'd be nice.

    -Niky Tamayo - 0917-500-1749 or 049-511-8635 (fax)

P.S. To any mods connected with gadgets.com or buyandsell.ph (whichever), please post this on the other boards... I'm desperate to get that HDD before it's wiped.

I'll pass the word along Niky. Two years ago, some people broke into our Intramuros satellite office. They were able to take off with two HP laptop,a Canon PoweShot A60, an HP LCD projecter and some other stuff. I hate to be a spolier of hope for you but we never recovered any of these.

yup baka makatulong yung management nung venue. nangyari na yan sa dati kong office. nag conference sila sa isang sikat na hotel jan sa ortigas and nawala yung hundred thousands worth na LCD projector na unfortunately ay hiram lang din sa isang malaking (as in international) na research org.

kaso ang masama ayaw sila tulungan nung security ng hotel kahit na malinaw sa isang security cam na meron isang waiter na dumampot nung LCD. to make the story short, yung lawyer na lang ng dati kong office ang kumausap sa management. and guess what???? lumabas ang LCD projector... hmmmmm.......

Looks like my ze5270. I too doubt the laptop will be recovered. In hindsight, I store multiple copies of critical data on external hard drives plus cdrw/dvdrw. One with a 2.5" hard drive could be taken home and should fit fine in a purse.

flashdrives would be good backup solutions if your data doesnt take too much space.

I may suggest also posting this in the appropriate section of tipidpc.com, pc-tipid.com and pinoypc.net.

Can one of you guys do that? I'm not a member of any of those boards. Any help would be appreciated.

I know the laptop is pretty much a loss, but I'm hoping if the right person buys the unit secondhand, they'll have the decency to forward the data to me.

There is supposedly a security cam. The police are at the conference site right now getting impatient waiting for the technician. There is one suspect, a guest of the conference who cleared out of her room and just left (without bringing any of her work stuff in the exhibit hall)...

I really don't expect anything... I'm already traumatized by the loss of (I estimate) almost a million pesos worth of data from our desktop that was caught in a fire... losing the laptop would make that loss hurt even more, because the meager backup data we actually saved was on that laptop.

And to think that we were planning to purchase a new HDD to back-up that data this week. Sobrang bad timing...

Thanks guys. If someone could post it on the PC forums and buy and sell boards, it'd be appreciated.

In this day of digital age, backup talaga is an indispensable insurance policy.

Some people even store their hardisks and cds in a safety deposit box at the bank.

We were getting ready to back everything up nga... ...dyahe talaga.

Problem was, after the fire, we used up a lot of money rebuilding, and it's only recently that we had the funding to start buying new gadgets again.

Tagaytay Country Hotel (at the rotunda). Didn't want to post it earlier, pero naiinis na yung mother ko sa kanila, as their lack of security was really at fault... the laptop and projector were installed in a ballroom, fer chris'sakes.

Also, mukhang ginagago rin sila ng manager sa room fees at payments... either that, or these guys are really scatterbrained... inconsistent billing and application of fees.

Our organization is already filing a legal complaint with the police.

might be helpful if you also specify the laptop's serial no. to warn prospective buyers that the machine is stolen. just my 2 cents.

i'm very sorry for your loss.

Thanks guys. As for the serial number, the computer is a refurbed replacement unit given to us by HP to cover a warranty claim on a previous laptop (and they didn't remit our data then, either, arseholes) so the manuals and papers are incomplete.

Mahirap talaga kung walang back-up. Ang ginagawa ko, monthly back-up since may cd writer naman ang laptop. Mura lang blank CD. Ingat talaga ang kailangan ngayon

oh great! mahirap yatang ma-identify yung machine nyo from another without the unique serial number of the laptop. and it is very easy to do a low-level format of the HD and install OS.

i hate to say this but you have to accept the fact na almost impossible nyo na mare-recover yung laptop, much less the HD with data intact. imagine it as any cellphone, without the serial number, di mo masasabi na sa iyo nga iyun. and madali syang mabebenta or gamitin ng nakadampot.

your best bet eh pag may nagsqueal dun sa hotel and isoli yung laptop.
