have no experience with both brands but leaning towards the asus because of the 1gb ram and the dvd drive. but parang mas kilala ang HP di ba?
do both brands have local service centers?

I'd also lean towards the ASUS. But I'd go with a minimum of 2GB ram, esp with Vista Home Premium.

512mb ram on the HP is a bit short even with Vista Home Basic unless the HP will be used mostly for internet surfing or office work.
