I updated my BIOS to the latest one when it was still XP before I reformatted and installed Windows 7. I haven't tried installing the Super Hybrid Engine yet, will try that later...

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit itself works beautifully. Command and Conquer 3 was a pain initially though. I had to first download and install the DirectX runtime from Microsoft and then patch C&C 3 via the built-in updater before it started working.

I like it.


Now that Windows 7 retail is here, I'll spend the rest of the year upgrading a few more Windows computers. That'll leave me with several unused Vista licenses. Then next year, I'll be concentrating on the Macs and see how Snow Leopard runs on my older Core Duo Mini.

Congrats! I agree, can't seem to tell the difference (in terms of speed) from XP to 7. Using Windows 7 Home Premium on my Asus Eee
* tidius1203, did you re-install Super Hybrid Engine on your Eee? if so, I can only assume you also updated your bios in order for it to work. Pls let me know.

Super Hybrid Engine does not work with Windows 7... Tried it...

I'm not sure if this is a compatibility issue, a dirty optical drive, or possible bad ram.

But, a few older games had issues installing:

IL2/Forgotten Battles - wouldn't install at all regardless of compatibility settings (Pacific Fighters installed fine)

Homeworld 2* - reading a corrupt install file, forcing an abort.

C&C: Generals* - I/O error near the end of the install, also forcing an abort.

So far, these games have installed fine:

Flight Simulator X
X-Plane 9
Pacific Fighters using XP compatibility mode
Command and Conquer 3 with DirectX runtime install and patching
Doom 3
Battlefield 2
Half Life 2/Orange Box

I can't seem to find my COD4, LOMAC, Falcon 4: Allied Force, NFS: Underground games. They probably got snagged by relatives since we had a lot of visits this year.

I'll go ahead and temporary disconnect the hard drive with 64-bit Win 7 in it and put in an EIDE drive with XP Home in it. I'll attempt to install the problematic games on it.

As for my non-game applications, they all installed straight forward except for Power Director 3 which came with my old X800XL video card. I had to use XP compatibility mode before it installed. It's pretty old (The latest version is 8). But, it saves fine to Divx avi plus I like its trimming tool for video clips. So I continue to use it.

When I was in XP Pro, I used Norton 360 v1.0. Now in Win7, I'm using AVG internet security 9.0.

I'm using MS Security Essentials (antivirus) and Spybot: Search and Destroy. They're both free. MSE is quite light compared to the Symantec Endpoint Corporate I was using.

After upgrading to Win 7 on my netbook, it created a folder called "Windows.old" in it are docs, pics, programs etc...can I safely delete this folder? It looks like this folder was auto created to save whatever I have prior or during the clean install.

I don't see why not. If you did a clean install, I take it you didn't need anything from the previous install.

I'm using NOD32 on this laptop and BitDefender on my desktop. NOD32 is a whole lot lighter than BitDefender, so it's my choice for my low-spec laptop.

I recently adjusted the speed of the DDR3 1600 to run at its rated speed. It was previously defaulting to DDR3 1333 which is the motherboard default. I attempted another reinstall of Homeworld 2 and C&C: Generals. What do you know? They installed fine this time!

Lessons learned...... Run RAM at rated speed. I know running them above their rated speed can be bad. But, I didn't know running them below their rated speed can also be bad especially since I've done it before with no apparent ill effects.

IL2/Forgotten Battles is hopeless though.

What's the difference ba between Windows Vista and Windows 7? I've never tinkered with Vista since its launch. Looking at screenshots, mukhang pareho lang ang interface ng 2?

The side bar is gone as well as the tiling Window switcher. The Taskbar also seems less functional in Windows 7. I like Vista's Taskbar better.

1024-896=128. Is this RAM on a laptop? Usually, some RAM is taken up by the video if there's no dedicated video ram.

I was talking about the speed of my DDR 3 1600 RAM. MY motherboard default (DDR 1333) was too slow. So, I adjusted the bios to run the memory at DDR 1600 speeds.

Blitzkrieg (the original 2-d game) is one of my favorites. It was also giving I/O errors during the install when my RAM was running below its rated speed.

I did a reinstall after adjusting the RAM speed. Sure enough, it too installed correctly and ran fine.

So far, the old games that installed and ran successfully in Windows 7 64-bit:

Flight Simulator X
X-Plane 9
Pacific Fighters
C&C: Generals
C&C 3: Tiberium Wars
Battlefield 2
Doom 3
Homeworld 2
Orange Box
Blitzkrieg

Other old games I still play:
MS Combat Flight Simulator 2
MS Combat Flight Simulator 3
MS Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far

They're MS games. Chances are high they'll run fine in Win 7 64-bit.

Add: So far, it's only IL2/Forgotten Battles that refused to install in Win 7 64-bit. Besides the three MS games, I still have the first Homeworld, the Total War series, and Far Cry to install.

I have to say I'm satisfied with the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows.

Sure enough. All three MS games work fine in Win 7 64-bit unpatched and no mumbo jumbo required. Close Combat 2 dates back from 1997. Combat Flight Simulator 2 dates back from 2000 and Combat Flight Simulator 3 came out in 2002.

And yet, IL2 Forgotten Battles came out in 2003 and wouldn't work whatsoever. Something stinks...... I think it's Micro$haft.

Microsoft has it's own free antivirus. Have you tried that on windows 7?

Far Cry was a no go. Previous installs in XP and Vista had reported one of the cd's was going bad.

Rome: Total War was also a no go. It reported a corrupt install file just like some of the other games.

Homeworld.... I won't even bother. I only play it when Homeworld 2 isn't working for some reason.

I'd install Medieval 2: Total War except it too is missing. Crap. I haven't even installed it yet on any of my computers and my wife's relatives already got hold of it. Oh well. It was in the bargain bin.

I noticed Far Cry 2 and Mass Effect are also in the bargain bin. I might have to buy those.

Maybe it's just me. But, Firefox seems to be crashing a lot more with Windows 7 64-bit especially at this site.
