What makes the Android so compelling is the open access given to developers to develop features for the Android devices. People are free to develop apps that can directly access the hardware functions of the phone - Wifi, GPS, Camera, file system of the phone, etc. Think - adding functionalities to your phone without buying a new one! Of course, if it's a new hardware device you need (like WiMax connectivity) then it's a hardware upgrade. Phone hardware manufacturers who will insist in keeping their closed technologies will soon realize that fancy marketing gimmicks will not be enough.
Android is freedom to choose - for us customers.

Sleek demo:

Although the Open Handset Alliance members like Motorola, Samsung, HTC, etc have launched their own, this is the first time Google will actually sell a hardware of its own.
