I think, this will be less fun for most of the guys here in... but it it will be fun on the other side of thrilling.

Out of the data center and into the desert
The sun blazes on the reddish-pink sands of the Mojave in California. The dry air, searing heat, and rugged landscape will soon set the stage for a punishing race, the first of its kind. Off-road vehicles will thunder across the Mojave’s vast dunes, climb over jumbled rocks, speed along dry lake beds, and rumble through desert washes on a unique test of robotic and computing prowess.

Sandstorm's driver is a computer equipped with four Intel® Itanium® 2 “Bandera” processors.

On March 13 the modified Hummers, Jeeps, and other vehicles will have 10 hours to cover the harsh terrain on the 210-mile route from Barstow, Calif., to Las Vegas, Nev.

But there’s a catch. These off-road rigs will have no drivers inside. No mechanics. No human navigators. Many of them will, however, be stuffed with high-end Intel® processors. One vehicle will have a bevy of them.

    Chip of the desert
“Sandstorm,” Carnegie Mellon University’s entry in the race, is the Intel-sponsored vehicle. A modified military surplus High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), Sandstorm is arguably the most advanced ground vehicle ever built.
