Daming pinoy pupunta to compete! Esp Enzo Pastor, Mike Potenciano, Ramirez family, Jojo Silverio(?), Jody Coseteng(?), Mark Goddard(honorary pinoy!) etc, etc. Good luck to all!!!

SAN MIGUEL BEER SUPPORTS POTENCIANO’S MACAU EFFORT

The country’s best and internationally-acclaimed beer, SAN MIGUEL BEER, has formed another masterful alliance with one of the local hopefuls to bring the greatness of the Filipinos in the forefront of the world’s motorsports arena once again.

Southeast Asia’s most prestigious racing event, the Macau Grand Prix, will serve as the showcase of the newly formed SAN MIGUEL-ZED-MP TURBO Team Philippines, with veteran race driver Mike Potenciano running in the Asian Formula 2000 Race on November 17, 2002.

After a very successful and controversial AF2000 series campaign, where Potenciano finished in 2nd place overall, the San Pablo native will head the country’s efforts in reestablishing the Filipino’s racing skills in international competitions.

“I’m very happy and proud to be given the chance by SAN MIGUEL BEER to compete in the hardest and most challenging race circuit in our region, the Macau GP,” said Mike during his preparations for the race. “We feel very confident and very motivated that with San Miguel’s help, we will push our team to its maximum to win this event.”

The 49th Macau GP is where the world’s eyes are focused on after most of the racing greats have made their mark there. Our very own Dodjie Laurel twice won the GP in the early 50’s and the legendary Ayrton Senna took the initial F3 race in 1983. Five time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher took the 1990 race with McLaren driver David Coulthard doing the same the next year. Most recently, Jenson Button won the 1999 race and has progressed to F1 immediately after.

The 6.2 km-long Macau Guia Circuit is considered to the world’s most demanding circuit with its long straights and its sharp and twisty corners, providing for some of the most exciting races to be run. Following the style and glamour of Monaco, the country’s street circuit plays host to more than 300 drivers and more than hundred of thousands spectators.

The SAN MIGUEL-ZED-MP TURBO Team Philippines will now be able to concentrate in getting the best out of its AF2000 car having been almost there to take the title after the controversial race in Zhuhai, China last October. A post-race disqualification of the winner, Malaysian Zarith Alfian, elevated Singapore’s Denis Lian to first place and steal the championship from Potenciano by only 2 points. This time, the team is ready and prepared for all problems.

“We have learned very valuable lessons in the last race. We should always go for the win and always expect the worst in officiating,” said Potenciano, still hurting from the incident. “Even though this will be our first time to race in Macau, we will be giving it our best and prove our capabilities. We hope to raise the Filipino flag in Macau this weekend.”

The AF2000 Series will have their farewell race in Macau this weekend when the Formula BMW Asia Championship replaces it next year. The 1996 AF2000 Champion, India’s Narain Karthekiyan, still holds the fastest race lap around the circuit in a Dallara F3 car and was the champion when Potenciano took the Rookie Championship in the same year. The series also brought the likes of Japan’s Takuma Sato and Malaysia’s Alex Yoong into F1.
