For the first time in its short time in the sport, a BMW Sauber will lead the field around to start a Grand Prix from the pole position. Robert Kubica saved his best for his final lap of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, stopping the clocks with a best time of 1:33.096s, three hundredths of a second clear of Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.
Massa dominated practice ahead of qualifying and was again the man to beat today in qualifying. That was until his very final run where he proved blisteringly fast once again, but lost time mid-lap, taking the chequered flag just 0.027s shy of Kubica’s best. The Brazilian will be disappointed to miss out on the pole position, but knows he has the pace to challenge Kubica from the outset of the 57-lap Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton rebounded from yesterday’s shunt, putting in a solid lap in his McLaren Mercedes to qualify third, less than two-tenths off Massa and ahead of Kimi Raikkonen who is having a low-key weekend so far in the second F2008.
Heikki Kovalainen lines up in fifth position in the second McLaren just ahead of Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW Sauber. For Heidfeld, sixth position on the grid is a good result after struggling with the handling of his F1.08 for much of the weekend.
Jarno Trulli starts seventh in the leading Toyota with Team-mate Timo Glock back in 13th. Nico Rosberg led the way for Williams Toyota and will be reasonably satisfied to qualify in eighth position.
Team-mate Kazuki Nakajima disappointed in 16th.
Things are looking up at Honda as Jenson Button made it into the final round of qualifying, setting the ninth best time ahead of Fernando Alonso in the leading Renault. For Renault, making it into Q3 was the target in what is looking like another tough season ahead.
There will be some long faces at the Red Bull Renault team as neither Mark Webber nor David Coulthard were able to make it into the top ten. Webber just missed out on making it into Q3 and lines up 11th while Coulthard had a disappointing run to 17th.
Rubens Barrichello starts 12th in the second Honda ahead of Nelson Piquet in his Renault and Sebastien Bourdais who has shown the way to his highly rated team-mate Toro Rosso Ferrari Sebastian Vettel all weekend long.
Force India has yet to make it into the second round of qualifying so far this year, much to their frustration. A mistake from Giancarlo Fisichella on his first run forced him to abort the lap putting himself under pressure for his second run. The Italian veteran lines up 18th with team-mate Adrian Sutil 20th.
arty time at BMW Sauber, but race day is when it really counts.
