Practice two - Ferrari in command as Hamilton crashes

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen continued to head practice in Bahrain on Friday afternoon, as the day came to a dramatic halt for Lewis Hamilton.

The Englishman lost control of his McLaren on the exit to Turn Seven, the fast chicane, with 10 minutes left to run, and though he caught the ensuing slide and held it, he ran out of room and his MP4-23 struck a barrier heavily enough to loosen two wheels and cause considerable damage. He was unhurt.

As if to rub salt in the wound, Raikkonen then banged in a new fastest lap of the session moments later, at 1m 32.327s. Massa, who had been quickest since deposing Hamilton early on, looked like dropping to second but then made a low-fuel run for the best lap of the day in 1m 31.420s.

Heikki Kovalainen vaulted up to third with 1m 32.752s just before team mate Hamilton crashed, the latter’s once-quickest time of 1m 32.847s leaving him fourth.

Behind them, Robert Kubica kept BMW Sauber close to McLaren with 1m 32.915s, and Nico Rosberg maintained his form with sixth place and 1m 33.022s for Williams. With Kazuki Nakajima in eighth with 1m 33.098s, there was an air of quiet satisfaction in the English team.

David Coulthard gave Red Bull continued cheer with seventh place on 1m 33.048s, but Mark Webber was on a different programme and was 13th on 1m 33.782s.

Between them, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais (1m 33.197s), Renault’s Nelson Piquet (1m 33.247s), Honda’s Jenson Button (1m 33.710s) and Renault’s Fernando Alonso (1m 33.755s) chased Nakajima. Alonso created some further excitement in the dying moments as he and Adrian Sutil came together in Turn One as Alonso dived down the inside, almost losing it in the process, and the Force India driver didn’t see the Renault as he turned in.

Toyota focused on race work, as Jarno Trulli headed Timo Glock in 14th and 15th places (1m 33.822s and 1m 33.856s respectively). Then came Honda’s Rubens Barrichello (1m 33.966s), BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld (1m 34.023s), Force India’s Giancarlo Fisichella (1m 34.388s), Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel, Sutil (1m 34.405s) and the Super Aguris of Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson (1m 35.288s and 1m 35.712s respectively).

For the first time in its short time in the sport, a BMW Sauber will lead the field around to start a Grand Prix from the pole position. Robert Kubica saved his best for his final lap of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, stopping the clocks with a best time of 1:33.096s, three hundredths of a second clear of Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.

Massa dominated practice ahead of qualifying and was again the man to beat today in qualifying. That was until his very final run where he proved blisteringly fast once again, but lost time mid-lap, taking the chequered flag just 0.027s shy of Kubica’s best. The Brazilian will be disappointed to miss out on the pole position, but knows he has the pace to challenge Kubica from the outset of the 57-lap Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton rebounded from yesterday’s shunt, putting in a solid lap in his McLaren Mercedes to qualify third, less than two-tenths off Massa and ahead of Kimi Raikkonen who is having a low-key weekend so far in the second F2008.

Heikki Kovalainen lines up in fifth position in the second McLaren just ahead of Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW Sauber. For Heidfeld, sixth position on the grid is a good result after struggling with the handling of his F1.08 for much of the weekend.

Jarno Trulli starts seventh in the leading Toyota with Team-mate Timo Glock back in 13th. Nico Rosberg led the way for Williams Toyota and will be reasonably satisfied to qualify in eighth position.

Team-mate Kazuki Nakajima disappointed in 16th.

Things are looking up at Honda as Jenson Button made it into the final round of qualifying, setting the ninth best time ahead of Fernando Alonso in the leading Renault. For Renault, making it into Q3 was the target in what is looking like another tough season ahead.

There will be some long faces at the Red Bull Renault team as neither Mark Webber nor David Coulthard were able to make it into the top ten. Webber just missed out on making it into Q3 and lines up 11th while Coulthard had a disappointing run to 17th.

Rubens Barrichello starts 12th in the second Honda ahead of Nelson Piquet in his Renault and Sebastien Bourdais who has shown the way to his highly rated team-mate Toro Rosso Ferrari Sebastian Vettel all weekend long.

Force India has yet to make it into the second round of qualifying so far this year, much to their frustration. A mistake from Giancarlo Fisichella on his first run forced him to abort the lap putting himself under pressure for his second run. The Italian veteran lines up 18th with team-mate Adrian Sutil 20th.

arty time at BMW Sauber, but race day is when it really counts.

The race is starting in about 10 minutes....

A full tank of gasoline in Bahrain costs only about $10 or P420! Whew!

    Exciting start!

It initially became FM KR RK HK NH.... LH is immediately thrown back to midpack because of a poor start and then he hit the back of FA's car and he needed to go back to the pits.... NH just overtook HK....

    The McLarens are struggling!

    LH is 18th!

Nope, no penalty required. Hamilton can't control where on the racetrack he will appear after he leaves the pits. If Raikkonen is behind him he'll just have to wait until Hamilton can move over...which he did within the next 15 seconds without slowing Raikkonen too much.

Anyhow kudos kay Massa...he wins on Bahraini soil again
