Ferrari, Red Bull and Toro Rosso meanwhile will be again consulting with their respective lawyers to see if the FIA do in fact have a standing contract for them to race in 2010.

Ferrari has issued a statement indicating that it will not participate in the 2010 championship "until the conditions of its entry are satisfied" and indicated that the FIA has listed the team as an unconditional entrant despite "previous written notice to the FIA not to do so."

Red Bull Racing released a statement as well, declaring that it wished "to make it clear that its entry was submitted as a conditional entry, consistent with those of all other FOTA members."

Scuderia Toro Rosso's statement was identical to Red Bull Racing's.

    Sauber's 2010 championship entry secured

The FIA confirmed on Thursday that BMW Sauber have been granted a slot on the 2010 grid - taking the place of the departing Toyota team - subject to them signing the Concorde Agreement that governs Formula One racing.

BMW announced earlier this year it was withdrawing from the sport at the end of 2009 and last week sold the team back to original founder Peter Sauber, having abandoned previous plans for it to be purchased by investment group Qadbak.

Throughout the sale process the team has had no confirmed entry for 2010, the 13th - and final - slot for next season having been awarded to the new Lotus team. But now, after Toyota's exit and months of uncertainty, the future of the Swiss squad, who made their F1 debut in 1993, looks assured.

A statement released by the FIA said: “The FIA has written to inform BMW Sauber AG that their application for an entry in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship has been successful. Subject to their signing the Concorde Agreement, BMW Sauber will be awarded the 13th entry in the Championship, taking the place of the departing Toyota team.

“The FIA has worked closely with the Commercial Rights Holder and the teams involved over recent weeks and is grateful for their support in achieving the best outcome for the sport.”

It means that 13 teams are expected to compete next season: McLaren, Mercedes (Brawn), Red Bull, Ferrari, Renault, Force India, Toro Rosso, Williams, Sauber, Lotus, Campos, Virgin Racing and the US F1 Team.

The FIA will publish an updated 2010 entry list in due course.

Renault set to be taken over by David Richards, chairman of Aston Martin

Renault looks almost certain to sell a controlling stake in its Formula One team to David Richards, the owner of Prodrive and chairman of Aston Martin. He plans to run the outfit from its existing factory in Oxfordshire and continue to race them under the Renault banner.

In a move that is designed to relieve Renault of the increasingly onerous financial and management responsibility of running its own team but also spare Formula One the loss of yet another car manufacturer, a complex partnership deal has been negotiated that suits Richards, Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One commercial rights-holder, and Renault.

There was no official word on the development yesterday as the French car manufacturer’s executive committee met in Paris to discuss a change of ownership that is expected to be confirmed by Renault’s main board, led by its chief executive, Carlos Ghosn, next week. Richards was also unavailable for comment.
