saw the footage this morning of the gunner using the 20mm(?) cannon. Tipid na tipid sa bala, single shots lang palagi then wait for feedback from the spotter
Ba't kelangan pa ng spotter? Can't they attach sights/telescope on the gun itself so the gunner can see where he's aiming?
hindi nalang nila lagyan ng telescope yun gunner
parang mga tanga lang eh may spotter pa, nanghuhula tuloy yun bumabaril :D
Ang mahirap kasi they're in a city; they can loot as they please, then burn it down to cover their escape. E kung ginawa yan ng sundalo, and media caught it on tape, lagot.
If they were on top of some hill, or on an island, just blockade them to submission.
Some civilians have been giving food to soldiers (in non-combat areas) though.
Impression ko kasi sa sniper is precision shot siya, so maybe the spotter's there to range the target, check wind resistance, etc. -- and other high-tech stuff that may overwhelm a sniper. And i think they even take notes of each mission/shot for future reference?
But if its a cannon, don't you just spray the area? Sabagay, nagtitipid nga sa bala :D

Clashes erupt as Zamboanga City airport reopens, some areas back to normal | Inquirer News
But then, gun battles erupted anew on Thursday in Barangay Sta. Barbara, which resulted in the death of a junior officer, said Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, the military’s spokesperson.
Kung old school ganyan talaga. Even anti aircraft gun may spotter, unless may range finder and laser designator then there will be no need for a dedicated spotter. The spotter also acts as the one who will direct which one will be fired upon. The gunner's job is just to pull the trigger on the target, he may have no situational awareness thus the need for a spotter.
shooters job is to man the gun, aim at the target & pull the trigger
spotters job is to identify & confirm that the target has been terminated because the view of the sniper is impaired by the flash of light & subsequent smoke from a discharged round puffing out of the muzzle
shooting with a gun from an unstable platform like a slowly moving boat is not an easy task. waves are constantly shaking the boat wading through the water that could cause the shooter to miss more often than not

This is the info relayed also by thos hostages who escaped/ were rescued. They were asked to go inside different houses and loot whatever supplies/ food they can get. They were also asked to serve/ cook the food.
Of course we all know that they were used as human shields also.

Aquino hopeful Zamboanga violence over soon; 8 more die
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Fighting between Philippine forces and Muslim rebels in a southern city has been confined to just two areas and should be over soon, President Benigno Aquino said on Thursday.
But despite such optimism, heavy clashes broke out in parts of Zamboanga city on Thursday and eight rebels were killed and 15 surrendered in one district, said an army spokesman.
The gunmen, from a faction which objects to a deal the government reached with the country’s main Muslim rebel group, marched into Zamboanga on Sept 9.
The violence sits uncomfortably with the new-found reputation of the Christian-majority country as an emerging market success and one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies. More than 100 people have been killed and about 112,000 displaced in 11 days of fighting with the rebels from a breakaway faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
Aqunio, who has been in Zamboanga overseeing the offensive and relief efforts for the displaced since last Friday, said only 20 civilian hostages were still in the hands of the rebels and fighting had been contained in two areas.
“I don’t expect this to take too long,” Aquino told a news conference in his first public appearance since Saturday.
The army said only 70 rebels were holding out after about 100 had either surrendered or been captured, and 86 had been killed.
The violence has had no impact on Manila’s financial markets but it could make potential investors think twice before venturing into the poor but resource-rich south, which has untapped deposits of oil, gas and minerals.
Zamboanga was coming back to life on Thursday with some banks and shops opening. Two flights, one with only 18 passengers, from Manila landed at the city’s airport.
Aquino said he would stay in the city until the crisis was over, and promised a 3.89 billion pesos ($90 million) reconstruction fund. Hundreds of houses and buildings were destroyed in the fighting.
The government was determined to bring peace to the south and would talk with all MNLF factions, including the group blamed for the Zamboanga violence, Aquino said.
“We will sit down with those who want peace, but, we will not allow those who want to sow violence,” he said.
