the transistion from one reserve currency to the next takes time to play out

as of now i don't know what currency it will be

maybe it doesn't have to totally replace the dollar

maybe it can be a parallel currency operating on a parallel system that the US doesn't control

the US has tremendous sanctioning power via the dollar system and the world is fully aware of that and i'm sure many countries aren't happy about that

some countries could already be working on a parallel trade settlement system

reading some unpalatable reviews against trump here and elsewhere, i thought he was stupid and all.

South Korea hails Trump-Kim summit as ‘talks of the century’

    Agence France-Presse
    June 12, 2018 02:14pm
Seoul, South Korea -- South Koreans erupted in applause on Tuesday as Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un met for what local media billed as the "talks of the century".

As the historic first meeting between a sitting US president and North Korean leader began in Singapore, images of Trump and Kim exchanging handshakes and warm words drew jubilant reactions in Seoul and hopes for a new beginning with Pyongyang.

"We hope the summit will be a success and bring us a complete denuclearization, peace and a new era" in relations between the two Koreas and the United States, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said.

Moon, whose earlier meetings with Kim had paved the way for the Singapore summit, smiled and applauded alongside his cabinet ministers as they watched live-streamed scenes from the summit at the presidential Blue House.

He has spent "a sleepless night" with excitement ahead of the meeting, his office said.

The English language Korea Times welcomed the meeting as a step towards ending tensions on the Korean peninsula, which has been divided between the communist North and democratic South for nearly 70 years.

Since the 1950-1953 Korean War, South Korea has grown into one of the most prosperous countries in Asia, while the isolationist North has suffered a stagnant economy and alarmed its neighbors with its increasingly sophisticated nuclear weapons program.

"The two leaders are certainly under great pressure to make the talks of the century a success," the editorial said.

"We hope today's summit will make a breakthrough to open a new era of peace and prosperity," it added.

Elsewhere scores of people were glued to TV screens at the Seoul railway station, cheering and clapping in response to Trump and Kim's cordial greetings.

Jung A-im, a university student, said she was moved while watching the landmark meeting.

"Looking at the two leaders shaking hands, I thought... 'I am living in a historical moment'," she told AFP.

Many others watched live footage of the summit on their phones.

"A great shift in world history is in the making," one Internet user said in a comment response to a news story.

But others were skeptical of Pyongyang's intentions, citing earlier attempts to improve relations that later foundered.

"Kim Jong Un's agreement to meet Trump means he's having a hard time (from sanctions). But we're giving him a chance to survive again after we did so with Kim Jong-il," wrote another, referring to previous peace overtures to the North Korean leader's father.

most probably. i had a feeling though that dennis rodman had a hand in this summit to make it possible. kim jong un and rodman are best buddies (probably they call each other "kuya").

‘I’m so happy’: Dennis Rodman weeps as Trump and Kim meet

    Associated Press
    June 12, 2018 12:37pm

SINGAPORE --- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman openly wept on television in a live interview from Singapore as President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met for the first time.

The eccentric former reality television star is one of the few westerners to have spent time with Kim during multiple visits to Pyongyang, and the two struck up an unlikely friendship over their shared love of basketball. Rodman also goes back years with Trump and appeared on his "Celebrity Apprentice" show.

In an emotional interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo, Rodman, wearing sunglasses and a "Make America Great Again" hat, said he had received a call from the White House ahead of Trump's historic meeting with Kim --- the first between a sitting US president and North Korean leader.

"Yes, Donald Trump reached out," Rodman said, telling Cuomo he had received a call from a person he described as Trump's secretary.

"She called me and said, 'Dennis, Donald Trump is so proud of you. He thanks you a lot.' And that means a lot," said Rodman. He added that he suspected he "somewhat had something to do with this North Korean situation."

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the call.

Rodman grew emotional in the interview as he recalled former President Barack Obama failing to take him seriously when he returned from Pyongyang with a message from Kim after one of his trips.

Rodman said Obama "just brushed me off" and "didn't even give me the time of day."

He expressed hope that Trump and Kim would be able to make progress.

"We don't need a miracle. We just need the doors to be opened so we can start fresh," he said, telling Cuomo, "It's a great day" and exclaiming: "I'm so happy!"

Asked to describe Kim, Rodman said the autocratic leader was "like a big kid" who wants to have a good time but is "trying to protect his people" and his honor.

"This guy wants to be around the world, he wants to come to America, he wants to enjoy his life, he wants his people to enjoy this life," said Rodman, adding that Kim is "not a dumb man."

White House officials have said that Rodman would play no official role in the diplomatic negotiations. Last week, Trump told reporters that Rodman had not been invited to the summit but praised him as a "nice guy" and great rebounder.

Rodman told reporters at Changi airport that he had traveled to Singapore "to see what's going on," and that he hoped "that things turn out to be well for everyone in the world."

Asked if he would meet Kim in Singapore, he said he thought the North Korean leader had "bigger things to worry about" but added that every time he had met with Kim, it had been a surprise.

Rodman's trip was sponsored by PotCoin, a cryptocurrency company that gives marijuana businesses access to banking as an alternative to many financial institutions that will not do business with cannabis companies because marijuana is illegal under U.S. federal law.

In 2014, Trump tweeted dismissively about the possibility that he and Rodman would someday travel to North Korea together.

"Dennis Rodman was either drunk or on drugs (delusional) when he said I wanted to go to North Korea with him. Glad I fired him on Apprentice!" Trump wrote. /kga

Trump’s motivation is probably a nobel prize

Kim’s motivations are lifting of sanctions, legitimacy (his father and grandfather never met a US president face to face), make a deal with the US that the US won’t attack NK, boost image back home

BRICS are unhappy about US$ backed US hegemony

US alone can bully BRICS and they have history to back up their hubris. After world war II the US had displayed dominance in all facets of geo-political arena. The world is the witness to its economic might and generosity. For decades they have supported their allies get back on their feet and a possible 8 years of isolationism under trump will not change that

BRICS can collectively challenge the green buck, but the green buck will still carry more weight in any field because the US have more to bargain with. Thats the power of the green buck, substantiated by both history and value from major financial institutions

Green buck is still and will continue to do so for the forseeable future to be a powerful tool the US govt can wield before those who wish to challenge their hegemony

WWII woke up a giant and that giant will continue to be a monilithic figure in the financial arena. Money spur innovation. Money build structures. Money build ships. Money build planes. Money pay wages. Money convince a person to betray their nation. Money corrupts dictators. Money appease an adversary. Money buys a territory

As poster in the WW3 thread, another problem of China in their quest for world domination is that their way of doing it is aggravating a lot of asian countries not to mention long-time rival India.

That poses another challenge for them to overcome in order for their economy to supplant the US.

Trump imho is just a bump in the road.

seems like you dwell a lot on post-ww2-America

America was really great back then no?

    emerging unscathed after ww2

i can understand why Trump wants to make America great again

He's nostalgic for what America once was

    --

    Now present day America

after spending who-knows-how-much-money they still can't win the war they started in 2001 in Afghanistan

couldn't fix Iraq after they took out Saddam

couldn't do anything about Putin in Crimea and Ukraine

like that phrase we always read in mutual fund prospectus "past performance may not be indicative of future results"

    -

maybe dwelling in the past makes one feel good

the thought that the world is still firmly under the control of the US is comforting to many people

i don't dwell in the past

i see the global order changing

    it's now a multipolar world

    history may unfold slowly

but sometimes things can happen really fast

citing America's glorious past won't change my mind

    i have my views

    you have your views

what happens in the future will tell us who's right

    for now we're just spectators

The past world war woke up americas industrial might which up to now cant be matched by any nation, hence the hegemony status belongs to them

China can ambitiously try to challenge it but then again the per capita GDP fizzles it all out. A surge in GDP thru trade with america still isnt good enough to match US per capita GDP numbers due to sheer size of chinese population in the billions

In a conventional warfare china is no match in terms of quantity, quality and experience of the US navy. No nation in their right mind will ever invade the chinese mainland

BRICS is a shaky alliance at its best. China and india have their differences in the himalayas. Russia and china have border disputes as well.

US hegemony was the product of WWII but its not something they aspired for. When it landed on their lap, they embraced it and used it to their advantage

Chinas aspiration for hegemony has a long way to go

    No respect for human rights

"The broad and sustained offensive on human rights that started af"ter President Xi Jinping took power five years ago showed no sign of abating in 2017. The death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo in a hospital under heavy guard in July highlighted the Chinese government’s deepening contempt for rights. The near future for human rights appears grim, especially as Xi is expected to remain in power at least until 2022. Foreign governments did little in 2017 to push back against China’s worsening rights record at home and abroad."

Brainwashing Centres for those who think "differently".

"Inside China’s secret brainwashing centres: ‘People only see what the government wants them to see’

CHINA’S brainwashing facilities are so secret they don’t officially exist. But the horror that goes on inside their walls is all too real."

China New World Order. Thanks, but no thanks. I love my freedom.

"Imagine a society where everything you do, say and buy is monitored and evaluated by the authorities - a society where citizens are ranked according to good or bad behaviour. In China, this Orwellian scenario is becoming reality. The country is implementing a "social credit" rating system, made possible thanks to the mass collection of data on its citizens. It's set to be implemented nationwide in 2020. But the scheme is already being tested in some Chinese cities. "

Non-conformists, even ex-Chinese, end up either dead or missing, or probably both. Sound familiar? Hello Russia. Hello N. Korea. Shudder, shudder.

"Sweden Should Press China on Gui Minhai’s Whereabouts"

"This case has implications beyond one person’s freedom. The Chinese government has not only violated Gui Minhai’s fundamental human rights – it has done so across international borders. This should be a matter of grave concern not only for Sweden, but for all countries that care about the security of their citizens."

Hmmm... Fat boi seemed to have edged out in the concession department vs "art of the deal" guy. Fat boi ran out of cash in developing his nukes and delivery system, which he used to hedge in demanding the US to stop wargames with the SK gov't. Now he got what he wanted, without giving up his despot status over his people.
