Senator Grace Poe said Friday she still respects Vice President Jejomar Binay and acknowledges his loyalty to her late father, actor and one-time opposition standard-bearer Fernando Poe Jr.
But the senator said Binay still has to answer the corruption allegations hurled against him.
“Issue ito sa ating bansa sapagkat kinakailangan nating magbigay ng halimbawa sa ating mga kababayan (na) mayaman ka man o mahirap, ikaw man ay nasa pwesto o wala ay pantay pantay sa mata ng batas,” she said in a radio interview.
Poe said she wanted to show the public that a government official's loyalty should be with the people and not with his friends.
"Yan po ang aking sinisikap na ipakita sa lahat na kaibigan man o kapamilya, masakit man sa puso mo, andyan ang respeto subalit ang iyong pangunahing layunin ay ang iyong loyalty sa mga taong naghalal sayo," Poe said.
The senator signed Thursday the draft report of the Blue Ribbon subcommittee recommending public charges against Binay and others in connection with the alleged overpriced construction of Makati City Hall Building II.
Poe said that while Binay has been loyal to her father, her signing of the draft report was a sign of her loyalty on the virtues he taught her.
The senator said she did not think twice in signing the report.
Earlier in the day, Binay expressed sadness over Poe's decision to support the subcommittee report. —Amita Legaspi/NB, GMA News
