Aquino takes potshots at TV Patrol

MANILA, Philippines—Why greet viewers “Magandang gabi, bayan” when you’re dishing out bad news?
President Benigno Aquino on Friday night skewered executives, producers and staff of ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol during their anniversary celebration at the Manila Hotel for highlighting the negative in their early evening newscasts.
Without identifying him by name, Aquino jabbed at the TV Patrol main anchor, former Vice President Noli de Castro, for what he described as skeptical, out-of-place snide remarks on otherwise good stories by the TV network’s field reporters.
Aquino recalled for instance that in October 2011, the program aired a report about a 200-percent spike in passenger arrivals at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s Terminal 3.
“This is good news, and most importantly a fact. In spite of this, one of your news anchors managed to comment, and I quote, `Nasa NAIA 3 ka kasi; kung nasa NAIA 1 ka, doon malala (That’s because you’re in NAIA 3. If you were in NAIA 1, it’s terrible there)’,” he said.
“It made me wonder, what has the report about NAIA 3 got to do with NAIA 1? Has anybody said NAIA has been fixed? If someone did, it was not us. Perhaps he has forgotten the structure is 30 years old,” he added in Filipino.
“It got me thinking: didn’t the commentator hold the reins of government for six years? Let’s say they only inherited the problem. But what they passed on to us was a much older problem. He had been given six years to help fix the problem he’s complaining about. And now that we’re dealing with the problem, we still hear comments like that and it hurts.”
Aquino spoke before a crowd of ABS-CBN executives led by Gabby Lopez, Charo Santos-Concio and Ging Reyes; officials and staff of TV Patrol at the hotel’s Fiesta Pavilion.
Also present at the silver anniversary celebration were Senators Franklin Drilon and Loren Legarda, Secretaries Manuel Roxas II, Gregory Domingo and Ricky Carandang, Chairman Francis Tolentino of the Metro Manila Development Authority, Bangko Sentral Governor Amando Tetangco; Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim; Rep. Sonny Angara; Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon; Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares and Commission on Elections Chair Sixto Brillantes.
Aquino started off on a light note, recalling that as a youngster he used to tune in to Radyo Patrol for news, specially whenever power was cut off by a storm.
He praised TV Patrol for its courage and determination in bringing news and information to the public, specially in times of disasters, for the past 25 years, and being the source of accurate reporting “when there are doubts in the minds of the public about certain issues.”
And when it came to truth-telling, the President, who grew up in Tarlac province north of Manila, said he could not forget the police drama “Dragnet” where the lead character loved to say “Just the facts, Ma’am.”
Aquino then reminded his audience about his administration’s “factual accomplishments’’ that he enumerated in last Monday’s State of the Nation Address: PhilHealth benefits now cover 5.2 million Filipinos; the shortage of 66,800 classrooms is about to be filled; the turnover of more than 70,000 firearms to the remaining 45 percent of the police force without guns.
Then the President proceeded to comment on the network’s reportage.
But for the most part of his speech, he dredged up De Castro’s remarks on some stories, including last month’s rescue of an abducted Burmese boy by the National Bureau of Investigation, and the dialogue between Roxas and public transport drivers on transport fares.
The rescue had all the elements of a good story: the authorities got a tip and acted on it, rescuing the victim, and the boy was reunited with his parents, Aquino said.
“Everybody was happy except our anchor, who managed to remark that maybe the rescue operation was set up, and that ransom was paid,” he said.
“No matter how the reporter explained the operation, that the NBI conducted its own surveillance and that they had chanced upon the boy without anybody guarding him, the anchor kept pushing his point. The other guy who was watching with me even remarked `Naman’,” he said.
“Do baseless speculations help especially if you are on TV and you’re being followed by the entire country? If you’re only swapping stories by the street corner, there would be no problem with baseless innuendoes. But if you know you’re an opinion-maker, you should be aware you have a responsibility. I hope that the next time we say, `Magandang gabi, bayan,’ we really wish the people a good evening,” he added.
Before running for public office, De Castro hosted a public affairs show, “Magandang Gabi Bayan’’ on ABS-CBN.
The dialogue between Roxas and the transport drivers also went well and the journalist reported the good news on TV, until the anchor asked the reporter what their main complaint was against the President, Mr. Aquino said.
“My reaction was, ‘Where is that coming from?’ Everyone had agreed to solve the problem, and yet somebody else had another thing to complain about,’’ he said. “There was an agreement, and yet somebody else wanted a fight.’’
“If our condition improves, don’t we emerge winners? And if we sink, aren’t we the losers? Why would do others want us to sink?’’
Then talking of news in general, the President said, “If we serve Juan dela Cruz bad news every dinner time, he’d really end up famished in mind and heart because we give him no hope.’’
“You have The Filipino Channel, where foreigners and our own countrymen get news about the Philippines. Let’s think about it: any visiting tourist can create one job. How many tourists, do you think, cancel their vacation here because of the daily barrage of negativism? How many of our countrymen lose the opportunity for livelihood because of this bad news?’’ he said.
“If you’re one of the 10 million Filipinos working overseas, would you be enticed to come back if the news that you hear on TV is more frightening than `Shake, Rattle and Roll’? When did it become a sin to air positive news? ‘’ he added.
“Surely, while patrolling every nook and cranny of the country, you’d stumble upon a positive story that could be a source of inspiration and hope for our countrymen. It’s doubtful that if you air this news the TV and radio sets of your avid listeners would go on fire.”
He concluded with a reminder: “Everything that you say on TV affects the views of every Filipino – of himself, his fellowman and his country. If we convince Juan dela Cruz that everything that happens around him is bad, then he’d really lose any reason to achieve his aspirations. But if he sees that every problem is being solved, then he’d be fired up with hope and gain enough confidence to move forward because there is some reform.’’
He said he wasn’t asking the network to project a good image of the administration, but to balance the bad news with the good news. He asked for understanding if he had been too candid, but said this was better because it would promote understanding.

Di lang si Noli boy, pati si Mrs Roxas Sanchez at si Ted Failon madalas mag off the cuff remarks and parinig. But PNoy should keep his onion skinned reactions to himself if he wants the yellow press to be still on his side come next year's election... He should not forget the power of the Lopez media empire.
