Yes I was at EDSA 1, I even have a rounded barbed wire with yellow ribbon as a souvenir. I, along with my friends and relatives both here and in the province went so that we can relate to others a historic ocassion. So that if someone idiotic ask me later on if I was at EDSA I, obviously YES.

If people toppled a president through people power the first time expect a second, third, fourth and many more to come.

Well, there's a vital difference between what EDSA 1 was and what EDSA 4, if it happens, will turn out to be.

EDSA 1, even though many people may not have known what the "cause" was, toppled a 20-year dictatorship and allowed the country to move on, even if just a bit.

EDSA 4 will be a desperate attempt for communists, political has-beens (Cory, Ramos, Guingona, etc.) and opportunists to grab power.

    In extremely short form:

    EDSA 1 - toppling of a dictatorship.
    EDSA 4 - power grab.

But extrapolating the reason why you were there to cover everyone who was is even more so... the first people at EDSA weren't there to usyoso (though I don't doubt some came later) and it didn't turn into a circus until after a few days. I was too young to go at that time, but I remember it well. We were prevented from going by our elders because they were afraid of what was happening.

There are people who went who actually understood what was at stake, and what could have happened to them, but they went anyway. I don't think it's fair to say that those people only went for a concert or because they were told to.

Look at this EDSA IV... same faces, same people calling out for "good Catholics" to come out, but are they going? You can use the "Catholic" button only if the people believe in the issue at hand... of course, by now everyone is tired of the whole thing.

I'm half tempted to go, because Mrs. Arroyo is acting like a tiny Hitler... but I can't stomach the idea of marching with the leftists (I'm from UP) or the opposition.

As for EDSA II, I'll hold any opinion on why other people were there to myself. I went for a while just because I was pissed off at Erap's cronies, and nothing more. I didn't expect anything to come of it, and I was surprised that something did.

I know we're an "usyosero" culture, but give some of us credit for actually caring, please.

Actually, more people went to see the WWE Wrestling Mania at the Araneta than at the Edsa or Ayala rallies. That's a clear sign that people are tired with the same old rallies.

And if I may add further - if there were financiers "again" who paid those people who attended yesterday's rally, then he gave away money for nothing because the rally yesterday did not achieve anything.

According to the same photographers, sila raw usually mga nambabato at tinatandaan daw sila ng mga police n pag naabutan, eh di yari! So much for the "peaceful" rally (as quoted by their leaders) I guess. Aside from hinarang nila yung main thoroughfare to the city (EDSA) causing inconvenience to everybody & stopping the economy, nambabato pa .

If you want to make a change in the government. GO OUT THERE N VOTE! By not voting, it's like you're saying, "bahala kayo!" N then when the president isn't doing the job, or you feel you're being robbed, THEN ppl want to voice out their opinion n make some action. For me, for the ppl that didnt vote, they have no say, and their opinion doesn't matter to me, they didnt care about the elections, and now they want a change in government. Sorry to sound rude or offensive, but it's the truth.

Plz make sure we all vote! That's the loudest action you can make.

People Power is a national pride, but also a curse—a Pandora's Box that, in the minds of many, should be permanently welded shut.

Check my post again. I said majority, that is 50+1 and not every one.... again to quote timeasia magazine. People power is a curse... you have to live with it.

If you change that to "the majority of those who came later on..." maybe I'd agree.

I agree "People Power" is a curse. It's a curse because it fools you into thinking something fundamental will change after the event. But nothing ever does.

But standing up for what you believe in... the first time around... that was worth something. And for the people who first answered the call, when it still seemed like there was a chance of death or detainment, saying or suggesting that EDSA I was merely a baratilyo or a concert is demeaning their accomplishment.

That's true actually. During EDSA II, we didn't really think of it as People Power... it's only when certain politicians saw the opportunity, they grabbed it and descended upon the EDSA Shrine in droves... nakaka-turn-off nga. At the start, it was just a protest and a show of support for the inquisition team that was shot down in an unjustifiable manner in the Senate... it was only later on that it turned into the brouhaha that ousted ERAP.

I distinctly remember some boos when we saw Gloria at EDSA II. That's the point at which some people realized that the politicians were going to use us as an excuse for regime change.

I was flabbergasted when Erap actually stepped down. And I was skeptical at the steps the Lakas coalition took to put GMA in, as it skirted the edge of constitutionality. Nobody much protested after the fact, because they were happy to have a half-way competent president again.

But nowadays, my opinion on the competence of Mrs. Arroyo is very low. If she can't handle the media like the smooth-talker Ramos, the House (despite her majority) or even the Army (without Tabako's support), then she isn't quite cut out for the job.

That was Erap's biggest mistake. He resigned. If he held on, the Supreme Court would not have had any reason to declare the constitutionality of Arroyo as the new president. There was a military coup at that time, led by Angelo Reyes the traitor (kaya ngayon hindi maka-alis si Angelo Reyes sa buntot ni GMA), but obviously not everyone in the military is anti-Erap. And the military obviously cannot forcibly touch him dahil siguradong magra-riot yung mga Class C masa supporters niya. He could have barricaded himself and the constitution would have been at his side. I never voted for Erap, but he fairly had a good chance to legally insist his presidency.

But he resigned. And Arroyo learned something from his blunder, so she will not resign.

My uncle once said EDSA was good for business at their restaurant (Barrio Fiesta... formerly on EDSA opposite Camp Aguinaldo).

... I hope na matapos na tong kaguluhan sa Pilipinas. Pero, mukhang malabo dahil the problem is not just Gloria herself.

But during that time, he never came out in the open to declare publicly that he never resigned. In fact, Congress never objected the Supreme Court ruling if it is true that they never received any resignation letter from Erap.

If there were legal lapses that happened during that time, it has already been overtaken by events kaya wala na rin siyang habol.

The truth of the matter is Erap never officially vacated the post... just like Marcos never "resigned", but the physical abandonment of the Palace created the same effect.

Legally, he never did, but it became de facto because he fled Malacaņang Palace. Stupid move, politically, on his part.

*compact: Sorry, bro, kung ina-away-away kita dun... I just don't like being identified with the "usyuseros" who populated a lot of the "People Powers" in the past... Medyo mali lang ang dating sa akin ng mga posts mo before. Peace.
