Q&A: Manny Pacquiao!

How long did it take you to arrive to the decision of running for congress? Is it something you always wanted to do?

Before I decided to run for congress I thought about it a lot and I realized that I could help the people.

You are very, very popular in the Philippines….
Yes but I am not thinking about how popular I am, I am only thinking is how I can help the people.

Is being a politician going to take away from your boxing career?
No, I want to turn to politics but I want to continue my boxing career. That is my business, my life. I am known for my boxing career so I don’t want to lose that.

After Barrera’s defeat against Marquez, do you think that there is still a chance for you to fight him?
I am happy to fight anybody. I don’t want to close the door on fighting Barrera or Marquez at the right time.

What do you know about Solis, your next opponent?
I saw him fight last January. He is taller than me but strong enough. He is undefeated and a good fighter.

Have you started training at the Wild Card Gym yet?
Yeah.

Justin Fortune is working your corner?
Doing good. He is teaching me a lot, like Freddie Roach. It’s like having Freddie Roach.

So you think it will be the same as Freddie?
Yeah but I think Freddie Roach is coming to the fight. He is going to be in my corner.

Did you give any thought to going to Puerto Rico since Roach invited you to train along side Oscar De La Hoya?
Freddie Roach, he invited me to go to Puerto Rico and to train but I don’t have the time because the fight is close so I decided to continue my training in Hollywood.

Do you have a prediction regarding the fight, are you prepared to fight twelve rounds or do you think it is going to end any earlier?
My prediction is that it is going to be a good fight because this is my first time to fight a guy with this style and he is undefeated. He will try to win and we will see on April 14th.

Do you feel any added pressure on the fact that this is the first time that you headline a PPV? Unlike the other times that you have fought on PPV, many people were buying the fight to see you against a big name opponent. This time it will be you who they want to see. Do you feel any pressure because of that?
A little pressure because, you know, it’s me that is fighting on PPV and I hope that people want to watch the fight.

Are you happy to go back to San Antonio where one of the biggest fights in your career in the last five years happened between you and Barrera?
I am very very excited to go back there and fight and see the people there.

Bob Arum said that you want to top Jorge Arce’s entrance, do you have any ideas?
(Laughs) You know, entrances are not that important to me. What is important is the fight. To give a good fight to the people and make people happy. That is it.

Wow panalo pala si Pacman.
Now running for Congress is easy tsk tsk tsk tsk...but there's a problem incase he wins..Since he doesnt want to retire on the boxing arena, what if nagkararoon ulit ng match up with morales or kung sino man and na knock out sya??? E di ang headline e "PHILIPPINE CONGRESSMAN KNOCKDOWN IN 5TH ROUND"???? tHINK ABOUT THAT Mr. Speaker

In the interview last night, after the fight,- he seemed genuinely concerned on how to serve his fellow Filipinos. I just hope that he doesn't lose himself in our *stinking* political system/institution.

How I wish he concentrates only on his boxing career... But I guess nobody can take his stand/conviction away from him.....

he may be, but at least he should realize that going into legislative is beyond his capacity. Concern and dedication is not enough to be an effective legislator.

Did Pacquiao produce a senator?

MANILA, Philippines -- Now that it’s finally over, Manny Pacquiao’s fight at the polls is bound to go down as the most brutal, most expensive in his great career.
The sheer savagery surpassed the worst he had suffered in earlier defeats.
Pacquiao, as could only be expected, had refused to take a step back at the height of battle.
But it did not help any that, given his big fighting heart, the loser also squandered hard-earned pogi points when he refused to concede and acknowledge defeat long after the (people’s) verdict had been rendered.

The Pacman was said to have wasted over P100 million in his bitter bid to topple the incumbent Darlene Antonino-Custodio from Congress.

But, more than finances, it was in the sensitive area of public trust and respect wherein Pacquiao had been severely battered.
Yes, the boxing super hero nearly went bankrupt after he indefinitely refused to acknowledge defeat at the hands of a small, gentle foe.
Every second he had spent on the floor protesting, as Custodio continued to pad her lead in the official tally, would cut a deeper wound in Pacquiao’s proud psyche.

The angelic winner definitely didn’t look like she packed a devil’s punch that could stop the most popular living Filipino hero.
You can now call that winning shot the sweetest, wildest. Call it whatever you may.
But please don’t buy the cheap tout which says Pacquiao’s resounding defeat in the recent congressional polls has effectively softened Pacquiao, thereby rendering him ripe for a loss inside the boxing ring.
In the first place, do you expect Mike Buffer to also welcome Pacquiao into the arena in his next fight as “the losing congressional candidate from the Philippines?”

OK, Pacquiao had allowed himself to be sucked blind into the dirty world of Philippine politics.
He had, in fact, lent losing (in the polls) a new, silly face.
He had, repeat, allowed himself to be a mascot of Malacañang madness.
But you definitely don’t know your super hero if you entertained the idea Pacquiao would be bringing his record defeat at the polls inside the boxing ring.
Pacquiao is doubly tough inside there.
This is what separates him from other ordinary fighters.
He’s a supreme stoic when it comes to business inside the cruel boxing ring.
Anyway, if the defeat against Custodio would have any impact, it should be in goading Pacquiao to be a better ring warrior.

The lessons learned in his sorry loss in the last election may not contribute physically in his next big bout.
But it goes without saying that, unlike against Custodio, Pacquiao would next study all angles and possibilities in that next ring outing.
Pacquiao need not be told that, in his last defeat, Custodio ended up lending him some solid pointers on athleticism.
She, for example, did not waste time to assure Pacquiao that he should not feel bad because the poll defeat was not a message that people no longer loved him.
In fact, Ms. Custodio had humbly assured Pacquiao she had not actually knocked him out, contrary to popular feel.
Well, it’s too early to say, but it appears Pacquiao has also succeeded in introducing a strong candidate for senator in the person of the wispy charmer who took the fight out of a famous knockout artist.

That, needless to say, should go down as the biggest point Pacquiao had scored in the biggest loss of his career.
