    Months ago:
Testimony from victims strongly suggests it was the rebels, not the Syrian government, that used Sarin nerve gas during a recent incident in the revolution-wracked nation, a senior U.N. diplomat said Monday.

Carla del Ponte, a member of the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told Swiss TV there were “strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof,” that rebels seeking to oust Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad had used the nerve agent.

But of course, the US government will ignore them.

    According to Isreali Intel:

In the face of statements by senior US officials that the Obama administration had crossed the Rubicon on military intervention in Syria, President Barack Obama declared early Thursday, Aug. 29, that he had not yet made a decision on whether to order a military strike against Syria. Although Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that US armed forces were “ready to go,” Obama said he was still examining options with his security team.
The US president added that he had no doubt that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian regime, not the rebels, saying that for violating international norms and human decency, Assad “should be held accountable.”

At the same time, the White House suddenly appeared Wednesday night to be engaging in maneuvers for buying time and holding up military action against Syria, after the armies of the Middle East and half of Europe were already standing ready after completing massive war preparations.
One such maneuver was a leak from White House sources about a delay in releasing to America and the world the promised evidence of Assad’s culpability in the use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people. It was postponed because “the report was not yet ready.”

Another were grumbles from the president’s circle that President Obama had found himself jammed in an awkward timeline generated by his foreign travel schedule – he is due to take off next Wednesday, Sept. 4, for Sweden on his way to the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg of Sep. 5-6.
This left the optimal dates for his decision to go through with the attack as Friday night, early Saturday, Aug. 31 or after Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 2.

Although Obama appeared still to be standing by that decision, debkafile’s Washington and Moscow sources disclose he has applied the brakes on the momentum for its implemention to buy time for US Secretary of State John Kerry to wind up secret negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and strike a deal: The US would soften its military action against the Assad regime and his army and reduce it to a token blow, after which the American and Russian presidents would announce the convening of Geneva-2 to hammer out a solution of the Syrian crisis and end the civil war.

The Kerry-Lavrov back channel has not yet achieved results and so, Thursday, the fate of the US strike on Syria was still highly fluid and its timeline changeable.

Syria is more complicated than Libya

    too many players...

    Iran is pro-Assad

    Russia is pro-Assad

there are pro-Assad groups in Turkey which is a NATO member

then there's the pro-US Gulf states who are against Assad

then there's Hamas, Al Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood and other groups... each with their own interests

NATO will not take part in a Syria strike — alliance head
    August 31, 2013 12:52am

COPENHAGEN - The suspected use of chemical weapons in Syria demands an international response but NATO will not take part, alliance head Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Danish media on Friday.

"I see no NATO role in an international reaction to the (Syrian) regime," Rasmussen told reporters in the Danish town of Vejle, daily Politiken reported.

He said the alleged use of chemical weapons was "a terrifying and horrible act. Chemical attacks are a clear violation of international standards -- a crime that can't be ignored."

"It demands an international response, so it doesn't happen again," Rasmussen said.

The NATO secretary general has in the past insisted on the need for a political solution to the Syrian conflict.

UN inspectors have visited the scene of the August 21 suspected gas attack near the Syrian capital.

The opposition says more than 1,300 people died when toxic gases were unleashed on Eastern Ghouta and Moadamiyet al-Sham. Doctors Without Borders said 355 people died of "neurotoxic" symptoms in the affected areas.

Rasmussen said he firmly believed the Syrian regime was behind the attack.

"I have no doubt that the regime carried out a chemical attack," he said, adding: "When you look at who has the chemical stocks and the means to use them in an attack, you have to say that it is the regime."

"There's not much to suggest that the opposition would be in a position to carry out such an attack." — Agence France-Presse

The West is tired of being fooled by their politicians that war is a worthwhile effort... Public support is razor thin.

Express Online had exclusively revealed that only eight per cent of Brits were backing immediate missile strikes on Syria.

The poll results, which came before MPs historic Commons debate on military action, showed 80 per cent of people are against David Cameron launching an immediate attack, while 12 per cent are undecided.

Our poll showed a significant 41 per cent of people are against action by Britain in any circumstances, while 39 per cent would only agree with a launch if the UN confirms chemical weapons have been used by the Syrian regime and then sanctions a strike.

The Conservative leader ruled out joining America in military action after the vote while Labour backbenchers called for him to 'resign'.

Speaking in the Commons, Mr Cameron said: "I strongly believe in the need for a tough response to the use of chemical weapons.

"But I also believe in respecting the will of this House of Commons.

"It is clear to me that the British Parliament, reflecting the views of the British people, does not want to see British military action. I get that and the Government will act accordingly."

The result will dismay those in Washington looking for a coalition against Assad and raise serious questions over the Prime Minister's leadership.

Mr Cameron had been arguing for intervention amid a growing chorus of MPs urging caution following the lessons of the Iraq war 10 years ago.

“From numerous interviews with doctors, Ghouta residents, rebel fighters and their families….many believe that certain rebels received chemical weapons via the Saudi intelligence chief, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, and were responsible for carrying out the (deadly) gas attack,” writes Gavlak. (back up version here).

Rebels told Gavlak that they were not properly trained on how to handle the chemical weapons or even told what they were. It appears as though the weapons were initially supposed to be given to the Al-Qaeda offshoot Jabhat al-Nusra.

“We were very curious about these arms. And unfortunately, some of the fighters handled the weapons improperly and set off the explosions,” one militant named ‘J’ told Gavlak.

His claims are echoed by another female fighter named ‘K’, who told Gavlak, “They didn’t tell us what these arms were or how to use them. We didn’t know they were chemical weapons. We never imagined they were chemical weapons.”

Abu Abdel-Moneim, the father of an opposition rebel, also told Gavlak, “My son came to me two weeks ago asking what I thought the weapons were that he had been asked to carry,” describing them as having a “tube-like structure” while others were like a “huge gas bottle.” The father names the Saudi militant who provided the weapons as Abu Ayesha.

According to Abdel-Moneim, the weapons exploded inside a tunnel, killing 12 rebels.

“More than a dozen rebels interviewed reported that their salaries came from the Saudi government,” writes Gavlak.

Saudis Go On Full Alert As Putin War Threat Stuns Muslim World

Posted by EU Times on Aug 30th, 2013

The Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) is reporting today that President Putin’s orders this week to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation for a “massive military strike” against Saudi Arabia in the event that the West attacks Syria has “stunned” the Sunni Muslim world and forced the Saudis to go on “full war alert.”

The Arabic Al-Ahd News Service confirmed the Saudis war alert by further stating:

“The Saudi Army is on full alert since today due to the increased possibility of a military attack by the U.S. military against Syria. The ground force operations command of the Saudi Army has ordered all the military units in Saudi Arabia to stand at a level 2 alert and fears were bolstered by recent statements by the Russian President Vladimir Putin in terms of a possible military strike against Saudi Arabia by Moscow.”

The GRU is also reporting today that Pakistan’s largest religious-political party Jamiat Ahle Hadith (JAH) is now threatening Russia too over Putin’s “war order” against Saudi Arabia, and as we can read as reported by The International News Service:

“Addressing a Press conference on Thursday, JAH Vice President Allama Zubair Ahmad Zaheer said that his party would hold demonstrations in all major cities to express solidarity with Saudi Arabia, and to condemn Russian president for his wild and unscrupulous threats.

He warned Putin that he would invite wrath from entire Muslim world if he dared to attempt harm Saudi Arabia. He demanded Islamabad to sever ties with Moscow since Putin’s threat was not meant for Saudi Arabia alone but was a threat to entire Muslim Ummah. He said Russian president’s threat would be treated as a declaration of war against Islam and a strong Jihad would be waged against Russia from all over the world.”
    Saudi army on high alert

DOHA: Saudi Arabia has raised its level of military alertness in anticipation of a possible Western strike in Syria, sources familiar with the matter said yesterday.

Saudi Arabia's defence readiness has been raised to "two" from "five", a Saudi military source who declined to be named said.

"One" is the highest level of alert.

"It is a must, no one knows what will happen," he said.

A second source said Saudi Arabia's defence readiness had been raised last week, and meant that all leave for the armed forces would be cancelled.

In Kuwait, MPs asked their government to inform them about plans for readiness to deal with repercussions of a strike on Syria.

Prime Minister Shaikh Jaber Al Mubarak Al Sabah held an extraordinary Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Interior Minister Shaikh Mohammad Al Hamad Al Sabah was told to take all necessary measures in case of an emergency.

this postpones an immediate US strike on Syria

Obama asks Congress to OK strike on Syria

WASHINGTON — President Obama said on Saturday that he was ready to take military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime in retaliation for its alleged use of chemical weapons, but that he will seek the approval of Congress before carrying out any military strike.

Obama says congressional leaders have agreed to schedule a debate and vote when they return to session. They are scheduled to return from their summer recess on Sept. 9.

Yes. IIRC McCain even visited Syria and posed in a picture together with known terrorists from Al Qaeda. Normally, that would be a treasonous crime but people are brain dead anyway...

Deadly Cloud: The Science Behind the Syrian Chemical Weapons Attack

It’s believed that last week the Syrian government murdered hundreds of its own civilians with chemical weapons. We don’t know which weapon they used, but we do know it’s one of a handful of chemicals called nerve agents.

Nerve agents were invented accidentally by a Nazi-era scientist trying to make a more effective pesticide. That’s why these molecules are so similar in their structure to the most common class of insecticides, chemicals called organophosphates because they contain carbon-based (“organic”) groups coupled to a phosphorous atom. And the way a nerve agent kills you is very similar to the way an organophosphate pesticide kills an insect.

It looks like last week’s massacre could lead to war (the White House is talking about a missile strike). With that in mind, here’s a look at the science of what happened.

This post originally appeared on Puff the Mutant Dragon, and has been republished with permission.

How do we know the Syrian govt used nerve agents?

The symptoms are unmistakable. For example, the pupils of victims’ eyes had narrowed to the size of pinpoints. That’s exactly what happened to the German scientist who invented tabun, the first nerve agent. The pinpoint pupils is a hallmark of nerve agent poisoning. There is no other chemical weapon that would cause these kinds of symptoms.

    What did they use?

All the nerve agents cause similar symptoms, so there’s no way to know for sure without a sample for testing.
