DAVAO CITY -- Two civilians were wounded when suspected rebels strafed a Philippine Army camp in Sarangani early Saturday morning.
Reports reaching Sun.Star Davao showed that the New People's Army (NPA) attacked the camp of the 66th Infantry Battalion in Malapatan town around 1 a.m. Saturday.
The rebels reportedly attacked the back portion of the Army camp with rounds from M203 grenades and other high-powered firearms.
As a result, the wife and son of Staff Sergeant Cornello Calao were wounded.
They were identified as Nancy and 18-year-old son Erick who were just visiting the soldier when the attack happened. The victims sustained wounds on the head and shoulders.
The rebels, numbering to about five, reportedly withdrew right after the soldiers returned fire.
Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Sequitin of the 66th IB said the rebel harassment could just be a diversionary tactic to shift their attention away from the Front 71 of the NPA who is now the subject of an intense military operation in Sarangani Province.
Sequitin, however, vowed that there would be no let-up in operations against the NPA's Front 71. (BOT/Sunnex)
