mahirap ba talaga or exaggerated lang?

I mean wala ka na ba talagang magawa as in nasa bahay ka lang?

My mom said ok naman daw eh...

My dad even said ok nga daw si Marcos eh, pero he might be biased kasi he is a Chinese businessman so it was during the time of Marcos that the Chinese were finally allowed to do business and own properties...

i was a martial law baby.

i remember nung bata pa ko, me curfew talaga.

tapos me mga dinadampot talaga at nababagansya.

When the Peso went from 7 to 14 per dollar, I remember my parent's hoarding soap and other items. There were bombings towards the end of Marcos rule. Businesses were closing because no one wanted to invest because of Marcos cronies. When Philippine Blooming closed suddenly, rumours circulated Marcos cronies wanted to take over the company.

Partly true. Halos araw-araw may display of dead bodies in our plaza. They were covered with banana leaves. Families with female teenagers were always wary and so scared of soldiers courting or abducting their children. Life in the province during the dictator's regime was laced with the gory details of military abuses. At such a young age, it forced me to understand what gory is. Barbaric. Ruthless. Been caught in the middle of crossfire twice. My aunt lost me from her grip in the middle of the exchange of bullets. Fortunately, an armed person took me from the fray. The good side is...it makes me more tough. "I am a survivor"-this i always tell myself. But i want to shield my kid from that.

The only thing I remember was my mother threatening me that the Metrocom will pick me up if I don't take my afternoon nap. Man that scared the hell out of me.

Oh yeah, and the cancellation of Voltes V, etc. and video arcades.

ano ba specific 'Marcos time' are we talking about, pre-martial law or after martial law was declared? because I think they're practically different eras.

I remember before in the early 90's when my brother and I (we were in our late teens then) were discussing politics and we brought up the idea na bagay sa atin martial law kasi ang gulo gulo na sa bansa, bigla kaming nasigawan ng dad ko. sabi 'bata pa kayo nung martial law kaya di niyo alam sinasabi niyo. hindi na dapat maulit yun.' I guess that says it all.

but when he speaks of Marcos' 1st term until the middle of his 2nd, he's all praises.

Wala kang kakatakutan noon if you were apolitical and apathetic. Meaning wala kang paki sa politics and to whatever was happening to your govt. If you tolerated corruption, torture, warrantless arrests. The moment you protested in any way, kahit magtipon-tipon sa isang lugar para ipaalam ang galit mo sa administrasyon, puede ka nang ipa-dampot, pahagisan ng tear gas, i-water cannon o paluin ng truncheon.

Yes you could move around freely but had to observe curfew. No long hair for men bec the military and police could suspect you as a drug user and on the spot, puede kang gupitan. The moment Marcos or his poilitcal lackeys had anything to say, lahat ng TV at radio station, titigil ang programming para i-broadcast ang mensahe mga namumuno. "We interrupt this program, blah blah blah...." and some brainwashing message would be aired.

Everything was OK for as long as you were an obedient, meek citizen who followed everything the govt told you, swallowed every propaganda line thrown at you and never questioned anything that Macoy, his cronies and his family were up to, no matter how illegal, corrupt or immoral it may have been.

I think it's just the same, I'm not quite sure 'cause I was only a student then.

But if I will based it on how our family lived, I would say pareho lang, mahirap noon, mahirap din ngayon. Medyo marami nga lang mabibili pera mo noon.

As for the curfew and longhair, hindi naman nagtagal yun, ilang buwan lang yata after declaring Martial Law, I remember my brother was caught for the "long-hair" thing. Pinag tabas ng damo sa EDSA (Hiway-54 then).

IMO, the Martial Law thing is more like a political thing by Ferdie, it's not like it was declared because people are rioting in the streets because there are no food or basic services or such, so like JackFlash said, if you're apolitical or just minding your own business, life was pretty much normal naman.

This won’t help the cause of antimarcos.

We get it that the author may not actually have the picture of his father’s bullet riddled Volkswagen he narrated about in the article.

Mawawalan sila ng credibilty if they do that.

Again dalawa aquino na naging presidente. So ang masasabi ko sa lahat ng delawan na biglang pinkian = the joke is on you.

ilang beses ko din ito iniisip...

kung di kaya ng 2 President, 1 Senator (Bam) and 1 Queen of all media.

Kaya naniniwala ako na evil women are worse than evil men

Men have abdicated thrones, made new religions and fought wars for women.

life during Marcos' time....
