Japan eyes PH, SE Asia for relocation of industries

MANILA, Philippines - Japanese firms are likely to relocate to other countries in Southeast Asia including the Philippines should tensions between China and Japan persist, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines, Inc. (JCCIPI) said.

“If the political issue in China will continue, it will push Japanese firms there to relocate to other countries. Many may want to relocate in Southeast Asia. Japanese investors may want to relocate here,” JCCIPI vice president and executive director Nobuo Fujii said in a telephone interview yesterday.

He said it would be difficult to give a number as to how many companies would move at this point though.
He also said it is hard to tell how long the tensions between the two countries would last.
“The issue may last for one month, two months or may take longer. It may not easily be resolved,” he said.

Protests against Japanese missions as well as shops, restaurants and car dealerships erupted in China over Japan’s move to purchase an island also claimed by Beijing.

The anti-Japan sentiment was even heightened by the anniversary of Japan’s 1931 occupation of parts of China on Tuesday.
Japanese businesses in China such as car manufacturers Toyota and Honda announced factory shutdowns amid the angry protests.
Fujii said that even prior to the violent demonstrations, some Japanese firms were already looking at the Philippines given the rising labor costs in China.

"The Philippines is seen to be an alternative given manpower costs and the quality of labor,” he said.

As compared to other Southeast Asian countries, he said Filipino workers also have an advantage in terms of the ability to speak the English language well.

He said earlier that many Japanese firms are setting up facilities in the Philippines given the availability of labor.
Among the Japanese firms that have made investments to the country recently are Canon and Brother Industries Ltd., both of which printers in their new facilities in Batangas.

ang problema yung constitutional provision na 40% should be filipino owned. dapat alisin na yun, dapat pwede na 100% foreign owned. basta huwag lang sila makabili ng land ok na para di naman makikipag-compete ang poor pinoy for land at for sure tataas ang real estate.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine unit of British firm B/E Aerospace is investing around P2 billion to manufacture aircraft galleys at the First Philippine Industrial Park in Batangas.

Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) director-general Lilia de Lima said the project will start in 2013, but the groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled for the first week of October.

De Lima said the project is significant since B/E Aerospace supplies the world's aircraft manufacturers.

B/E Aerospace is the world's leading provider of interior products and solutions and distributor of aerospace fasteners and consumables for commercial, business jet and military markets.

De Lima said the British company is making a P700 million investment in addition to the initial investment of over P1 billion.
The project is expected to generate around 143 jobs.

Best environment for some of us

In general, pwede mag invest 100% foreign ownership so long as they fullfill certain criterias. Examples would be:

    1. Industries/sectors not vital to national security
Primary example dito telecommunications. Bawal ang more than 40% foreign ownership sa telecoms. Kaya nga inuusisa ang PLDT ngayon.

    2. 100% of products produce would be exported overseas

    3. Kelangan ang paid up capital is more than $200,000.

    4. Of course, bawal mag retail ang mga foreigners.... Like yung sa mga 168 malls, bawal yan dahil may ari talaga chinese nationals pero may mga Pinoy fronts sila.....

    5. Bawal ang 100% sa Mining industry.....

Meron pang ibang criteria but i could not remember the rest.. pinag aralan ko ito dahil we were supposed to partner with a foreign group pero di natuloy dahil sa management issues... Nasa Foreign Investment Act of 1991 ito....

yung Hanjin shipbuilding sa Subic ang laki laki ng investment nila kaya more than 90% korean owned ito...
