Gov’t clamps down on CPP-NPA fronts
Malacañang will closely monitor how party-list groups suspected of being communist fronts disburse their pork barrel to ensure that the funds are not channeled to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).
"According to the Armed Forces and other intelligence agencies, there is already growing evidence of pork barrel funds being used for the communist cause," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told The STAR in a telephone interview.
"We cannot let this thing go on forever, and we might be taking action soon if the situation worsens and if we have enough evidence that will stand in court," he said.
Ermita said theCPP-NPA have been intensifying their efforts to extort "revolutionary taxes" from poor farmers, fisherfolk and laborers, as well as private companies, especially multinationals.
The CPP-NPA have lost their traditional sources of funding and resources from abroad after they were listed as foreign terrorist organizations by the United States and the European Union, he added.
The 8,000-strong NPA has intensified attacks on government installations and cellphone communication towers of a private telecommunications company, Ermita added.
On the other hand, National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said the authorities are "looking into issues of rebellion" in taking action against party-list groups suspected of channeling government funds to the NPA.
