Arroyo Bashes ABS-CBN for 'Irresponsible Journalism'

President Arroyo on Tuesday virtually accused ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. of being "irresponsible" while confirming that government investigators are setting sights on certain media personalities suspected of committing seditious acts, TV Patrol World reported.

The President made the statement as she sat as studio guest of radio station DZBB, the AM radio station of ABS-CBN rival, GMA 7. The radio interview was Mrs. Arroyo's first after she lifted Proclamation 1017 last week.

"At iyong kultura ninyo dito ng responsible journalism, palagay ko iyan din ang dahilan kung bakit number one kayong malayo ngayon. Malayo doon sa number 2 (Your culture of responsible journalism here is the reason why you're number one, ahead of the competitor at number 2)," Mrs. Arroyo said.
That is why the people know who's responsible and who's not)."

The criticism from the President came amid an ongoing government investigations into ABS-CBN's special coverage of the standoff at the Philippine Marine Corps headquarters on February 26.

The National Telecommunications Commission submitted 12 audio and video tapes containing the coverage to the Department of Justice to determine if the network and its cable news channel, ANC, incited sedition by airing footages of the standoff.

In the same interview aired Tuesday morning, Mrs. Arroyo said that authorities are investigating media personalities. She, however, declined to give details of the investigation. "Gaya ng sabi ko, ayokong masyadong makapagkomentaryo diyan dahil lalo na ngayon ay mayroong mga iniimbestiga (I don't want to comment much on that especially now that there's an ongoing investigation)."

The interview veered toward what the President thought about news reports about her, both favorable and otherwise. She wants responsible reportage and not articles favoring her, the President added. She said the media should avoid reports that provoke the people to rebel against the government.

"Hindi naman ako naghahanap ng isang press release na lang parati. Pero kaya naghahanap ako ng isang journalist na pwede nating ipakita na ito ay hindi naman ito puri nang puri. In fact madalas magbatikos pero alam niya ang gilid (I want a journalist who is objective, hard-hitting but responsible)," she said.

She said that this type of journalist should know what is "fiscalizing journalism" and the type bordering on sedition.

He-he!

Kaya raw No.1 ang GMA7 because of "responsible journalism", at malayo roon sa No.2 (referring to, of course, Ch. 2).

I have seen the airing of Channel 2 while Querubin is urging people to go to Fort Bonifacio. Nagtataka rin ako why ABSCBN is keep on playing the same messages from time to time. The situation there is very delicate and abscbn should also be sensitive to this kind of scenario.

Some of these journalists have also have leftist bias. Just look how they treat the Batasan 5 now, as if these "honorable" congressmen are some kind of martyrs or saints. Then these journalists treat our soldiers and law enforcers as wolves.

this COULD also be another tactic of malacanang. and it may work. she wants to take advantage of the network battle and again use it as a diversionary ploy!

    I agree to this.

Perhaps, GMA did say those words in earnest, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. On the other hand, she is also known as an avid follower of Sun Tzu's "Art of War." In one instance, the ancient Chinese strategist, Sun Tzu suggested to ally yourself with another nation then attack your enemy.

And what about GMA 7? The president couldn't have picked a perfect instrument in her own propaganda: anti-Lopez, anti-Meralco, anti-Maynilad, Channel 2 mortal enemy... etc.

Sure, GMA 7 may also have busted the president in their programs. But then again, they have a common enemy: the Lopezes and Channel 2.

si GMA ba may puso??? di sya pwedeng maging KAPUSO. hindi bagay sa gaya nyang mayabang at mang-aagaw ng pwesto. yung ginagawa ng media specially ch 2, that's freedom of the press. GMA's style is to obliterate anything that is not favorable with her. just look at what she did to the tribune! wala talaga syang puso!!!!

I also saw the footage of that DZBB interview with the president. LOL! Responsible journalism, being number one and way ahead of the number 2... stuff like that. In my opinion, the president was really sucking it up to the station.

Although he kept on interjecting that they also criticize the president and the administration, he said this while giggling like a teenage girl. No offense mga kapuso, but that's what he sounded like to me. Tuwang-tuwa talaga si Mike Enriquez. And who can blame him? Heheh.

    LOL...easy lang...

I've been following this. They were fighting with Noli over his support of her, so I don't think that Noli is any part of the reason why GMA is fighting with ABS CBN.

We'll see where this case goes. At the moment, the NTC deputy director says he sees no evidence in the coverage that could become cause for legal action.

Ika-nga, likely tactic nanaman ni Glo... "divide and conquer". Agree with resmile and CtrlAltDel, baka nga wise move ito on her part.

Instead of her general media bashing of the previous year, she's found a focus.

    And that's scary...
