Bicam OKs 9th ray to sun in RP flag

The bicameral conference committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives approved Tuesday the addition of a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag.

This came after the two panels reconciled the disagreeing provisions of the two versions of the bill amending the Flag and Heraldic Code.

Sen. Richard J. Gordon, chairman of the Senate panel and principal author of Senate Bill (SB) 3307, said the approval of the measure would foster greater unity among Filipinos regardless of religion.

‘’We are a country that has had a conflict with our Muslim brothers for the last so many decades. I think this is a bid step towards reuniting our country, recognizing the contributions of our fellow countrymen, Muslim Filipinos. We should recognize their deeds in our country,’’ Gordon said.

Included in the Senate bill was Gordon’s proposal to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag to acknowledge the courage, bravery and integrity of Muslim Filipinos who fought for the nation’s independence.

SB 3307 proposed amendments to Republic Act 8491, or ‘’An Act Prescribing the Code of the National Flag, Anthem, Motto, Coat-of-Arms and Other Heraldic Items and Devices of the Philippines.’’

‘’This is a great step in recognizing the fact that we had Muslims such as Lapu-Lapu, Sultan Kudarat, Amai Pakpak and Sorongan who kept fighting the Spaniards long before this country thought of a revolution against Spain. This would foster unity, making sure that nobody is excluded. If we are to have national unity in this country it must begin with our flag, it must be symbolized in our flag,’’ Gordon said.

‘’We take an amendment of the law here but we actually amend the mindset of our countrymen and bring the nation back to its original posture, one that will not accept tyranny. And we should give credit where credit is due,’’ Gordon stressed.

Members of the bicameral panel were Gordon, chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon committee and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and their House counterparts, Reps. Del de Guzman, chairman of the House panel; and representatives Ma. Carisssa Cocoluella, Salvador Escudero III and Roman Romulo.

I've got no objections to adding another ray to represent the Filipino Muslims, but as what I know they were never part of the Spanish controlled territory in our country...Mindanao...(they were never subjugated by the Spaniards), that's why they still retained their religion which is Muslim.

I hope this is not a political ploy by Senator Gordon for the 2010 elections. Mahabang usapin ito although we can never deny the fact that our Muslim brothers played a big role in fighting the Spanish invaders, hence, preventing the invasion of the whole archipelago.

May it be untimely or not, sana hindi ito makadagdag sa problema ng bansa natin ngayon.

yung original 8 rays represents the 8 provinces in Luzon.. tapos magdadagdag sila nang 1 para sa Mindanao.. eh pano yung mga taga Visayas??

I'd rather remove the rays altogether. After all, Japan's not having any trouble with a banner with a red circle in the middle.

at for sure may lalabas dyan na ang pagka-kontrata sa new flags would be worth millions/flag! Kumikislap na naman ang mata ng mga corrupt. nakakita na naman ng pagkakaperahan!

On the personal side naman, mas mahirap yata gumawa ng flag para sa project ng mga bata sa school. mahirap gawing evenly spaced yung 9 rays.

Senator Gordon could do better than that. I have a lot of respect for that senator, given he's one of the few alternatives in the senate. If he wants to run, he'd better think of something better to impress everyone.

muslims are not part of an ethnic group. anybody who practices Islam are called muslims. so it Igorots, Itnegs etc cannot be compared to Muslims in terms of ethnicity. however, how about those who are non-muslims and non-christians who fought for the philippines? maybe we can just remove the sun.

The Colt Model 1911 was the product of a very capable person, namely John Moses Browning, father of several modern firearms.

The pistol was designed to comply with the requirements of the U.S. Army, which, during its campaign against the Moros in Philippines, had seen its trusty .38 revolver to be incapable of stopping attackers. An Ordnance Board headed by Col. John T. Thompson (inventor of the Thompson sub-machine-gun) and Col. Louis A. La Garde, had reached the conclusion that the army needed a .45" caliber cartridge, to provide adequate stopping power. In the mean time, J. Browning who was working for Colt, had already designed an autoloader pistol, around a cartridge similar to contemporary .38 Super (dimension-wise). When the Army announced its interest in a new handgun, Browning re-engineered this handgun to accommodate a .45" diameter cartridge of his own design (with a 230 gr. FMJ bullet), and submitted the pistol to the Army for evaluation.
