I hope there will be no major casualty numbers. Fijian soldiers hostage na kasi sumuko.

Be brave Filipino soldiers. I hope you guys will get out of this mess alive.

With a report from Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News

The Syrian rebels are the Al-qada affliated Al-Nusra...

Syrian opposition fighters, including the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front, have taken control of the Syrian crossing of the Israel-occupied Golan Heights.

"Al-Nusra Front and other rebel groups took the Quneitra crossing, and heavy fighting with the Syrian army is continuing in the surrounding area," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The capture is thought to be the result of a coordinated attack by the Al-Nusra Front - designated a terrorist organisation by the US, UK and Saudi Arabia - and Ahrar al-Sham, a leading member of the Saudi-supported Islamic Front.

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino priest is part of the Philippine contingent which is currently in a standoff with Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights, according to Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak.

Tumulak, head of the Military Ordinariate of the Philippines, said that the Filipino chaplain was accompanying the country’s contingent under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force.

However, Tumulak did not reveal the chaplain’s identity.

Chaplains “take care of the spiritual needs” of Filipino peacekeepers, Tumulak said in a post on the website of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

He explained that chaplains celebrate Mass inside military installations, hear confessions, provide spiritual counseling and spiritual direction.

Tumulak called on Filipinos to pray for the safety of the Filipino peacekeepers, who have been holding their line in two camps at the UN-controlled Golan Heights since Thursday after rejecting a demand from Syrian rebels that they surrender their firearms.

Al-Qaeda linked Syrian rebels have been accused of seizing 43 UN soldiers in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and trapped another 81 in the region, the UN has said.

The US said on Thursday it believed members of the Nusra Front were among those who captured 43 Fijian soldiers serving in the UN disengagement observer force near Quneitra, a crossing from Syria into Israeli-occupied territory.

A further 81 soldiers from the Philippines are understood to be under siege near Rwihinah. The Philippine government said its troops refused to give up their weapons when confronted.

The capture and standoff come after Syrian rebels, including Nusra Front fighters, stormed the Quneitra crossing on
Wednesday, sparking an exchange of fire with Israeli troops.

In a statement, the US said it condemned the action by rebels groups "including the UN Security Council-designated terrorist group, the Nusra Front", which is al-Qaeda's primary affiliate in Syria.

The UN Security Council said it held responsible "terrorist groups and by members of non-state armed groups".

The Golan Heights is a strategic plateau captured by Israel in a 1967 Middle East war.

Syria and Israel technically remain at war. Syrian troops are not allowed in an "area of separation: under a 1973 ceasefire formalised in 1974.

The UN force monitors the area of separation, a narrow strip of land running about 70km from Mount Hermon on the Lebanese border to the Yarmouk River frontier with Jordan.

It comprises 1,223 soldiers from Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands and the Philippines.

Austria, Japan and Croatia have all pulled their troops out of the monitoring force due to the deteriorating security situation and spillover from the Syrian war.

UN officials noted that troops monitoring the area have been abducted twice in the last year, but released safely.

Maybe you should also think the Al-Nusra as battle hardened as well, since the Civil War has been going on for over 2 years...

Most of them are veterans from the Libyan civil war.

And to think, *some* people actually wanted to support the Syrian "rebels" just a year ago...
Damn, son! Where'd you find this?

i would have loved to hear this:
commander of filipino contingent to HQ: "Sir! We don't know how to surrender our weapons to them! Request permission to use our weapons instead, sir!"

but fight only if one has to.
