    Enrile resigns as Senate president

    (Updated 4:16 p.m.) In a privilege speech Wednesday, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday announced his resignation as head of the chamber "as a matter of personal honor and dignity."

    "As a matter of personal honor and dignity, I hereby irrevocably resign as Senate President. With the constantly shifting political tides, to muster the support of the majority of your colleagues and to maintain that support long enough, to achieve something for the people is a fete for itself," he said.

    In his speech, Enrile also answered various accusations against him, which he blamed for the unsuccessful senatorial bid of his son, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile.

    In an interview, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said there is a "consensus" among senators not to elect a new leader and just let Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada take over the chamber's leadership until Congress adjourns later in the day.

    kung nasa constitution natin yung certain age (35yrs old minimum?) na pwede maging senador, sana meron din na kapag nareach na niya retirement age (65) ay automatic and/or bawal na tumakbo.. e di wala na sana tong sila erap, enrile, honasan..

    I've yet to see a sitting senator who doesn't resort to grandstanding. Kita mo nga, resignation na lang one day before the current Congress ends it's session ginawan pa ng drama.
