Al Jazeera news anchor Mehdi Hasan corners presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella during his interview on Al Jazeera Up Front concerning the controversial remarks of Pres. Duterte.

Mehdi Hasan: "Is it difficult being the press spokesperson for a president who speaks in such controversial and many would say offensive ways. A president who says he’d kill his own kids if they took drugs, who makes jokes about wanting to rape women, who’s called the US ambassador a gay son of b*tch and the Pope a son of a prostitute, well actually a much worse word than prostitute.

Your job must surely be an impossible one having to spin for him?"

Ernesto Abella: "Let’s put this way, I understand that there’s a culture in here, but I understand where he’s coming from because it’s a particular subculture. The Cebuano subculture speaks in a very rough kind of humour, but I understand that’s why my task is to be able to interpret him and act as a conduit and bring out the true intention of the president."
Mehdi Hasan: "What’s was the true intention when he said he wished he had raped the Australian missionary before she had been gang-raped?"

Ernesto Abella: . . . . . it was a joke, a joke that was difficult to translate."

Mehdi Hasan: No, Pres. Duterte afterwards said he wasn’t joking. It wasn’t a joke he says so it makes your job very hard when you’re trying to defend him...

Pesteng yawa ni si Abella. I promised myself not to react to the posts anymore pero kinahanglan jud mogawas ang kamatuoran. Cebuano jokes are never tasteless. Case in point Max Surban and Yoyoy Villame's songs. Dont blame the culture for the dut's lack of decency and diplomacy.

First off, the question of Mehdi Hasan is closed to the premises he already stated and it looks like he's not after the answers of Abella. He's using the interview to drive his opinions.

Not defending Abella or saying that it's the personality/bahavior of Cebuanos.

All I am saying is that Hasan's question does not allow a favorable answer. It's quite clear that his intention is to rebut and not accept any other answers. Does that make my comment clearer?

Allow me to rephrase your statement without changing the context -

Du30 is radical. He does not fit the typical profile of a president.

There, that makes me feel better.

Hassan was just mimicking duts conversation style which Abella refers to as 'cebuano subculture'. You and Abella should get used to that style, right?

Well, w/ the president being uncouth and apparently perpetually afflicted w/ the incurable foot-in-mouth disease, abella's work is a palusot's nightmare. If it didn't reflect poorly on our country, that interview would've made me laugh. To see someone of authority squirm like that uncomfortably would be a funny comic skit i'd pay to watch

July crime rate down by 9.8 percent
    Published August 14, 2016 1:37pm

Crime rate fell by 9.8 percent in July compared to the same month in 2015, Malacañang said Sunday.

Citing the report of PNP spokesperson Senior Supt. Dionardo Carlos, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the crime volume in July 2016 was at 50,817 or 5,522 incidents lower compared to July last year's 56,339.

Also, the Palace official reported index crime rate went down from 17,105 incidents to 11,800 in July or a 31-percent decrease compared to the same month last year.

Crime versus poverty also decreased by 40.3 percent from 11,106 incidents last year to 4,476 in July this year.

The top three most prevalent crimes, Andanar added, was theft, physical injury, and robbery.

Andanar appealed the public for cooperation as the PNP fulfills the campaign promise of President Rodrigo Duterte to solve the rampant criminality, corruption, and the problem of illegal drugs in three to six months.

— Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/LBG, GMA New

    Jerome Lantin, ABS-CBN News

    Posted at Aug 14 2016 04:15 PM
