WTF is going on with these people and our gov't. They get our ever-valuable urban lands, voted for Erap, will vote for Willie Revillame if ever he runs, provide nothing useful whatsoever... and now we have to pay more taxes specifically to give them homes.

I'd rather have that stupid anti-planking law over this.

QC residents face new taxes for squatters' housing

MANILA, Philippines – A Quezon City councilor has proposed an ordinance that seeks to implement a socialized housing tax on Quezon City residents, who will have to fund a housing program for informal settlers in the city.

The ordinance, authored by District 4 Councilor Edcel Greco Lagman, aims to finance a housing program for more than 2,000 informal settlers.

“From all over the Philippines pumupuntang Quezon City for a better life, only to realize na wala pala silang bahay dito. What if bigyan natin sila ng magandang pabahay?” said Lagman.

Under the tax scheme, if a lot has an assessed value of P100,000 and above, it will be subject to a 0.5% tax from the assessed value, not including real property tax.

This means that for lots with an assessed value of P100,000, a minimum of P500 will be added in annual tax.

Quezon City residents have mixed reactions on the new tax scheme.

“Para magkaron din naman ng magandang pabahay ang mga squatter kasi kawawa din naman sila,” said Nora Valera.

Another resident, on the other hand, said the tax scheme may invite more informal settlers to Quezon City.

“Baka mamaya mas dumami pa ang squatters sa Quezon City dahil masyado nilang binibigyan ng incentive ang mga informal settlers,” said Jordan Tolentino.

The local government, meanwhile, said informal settlers will not be the only ones who will benefit from the tax scheme.

“Kung bibigyan natin sila ng housing, magiging taxpayers na rin sila baling araw. So we are breaking the cycle of poverty,” said Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte.

A meeting will be held by more than 80 homeowner’s association in Quezon City on Saturday to discuss how they can block what they feel is unjust tax. -- Report from Chiara Zambrano, ABS-CBN News

It's all because of political money. So much money goes into your pockets when you are an elected official.

Mas maraming bobo at informal settlers, yan ang target ng nagpropose ng bill na yan.

Those informed and well-educated can cry all day all night. But when election days come, mas may weight ang combined votes ng bobo at informal settlers sa mga nagdidisagree sa bill na to.

Yun ang target niya. Please the lowest class, for they are aplenty, and don't care about the higher ones, for they are less in terms of numbers. Result? Panalo nanaman siya sa election. Duh.

Actually they're not idiots, because even messing with the life of an entire population they never get any punishment or prejudice...

Actually, when you look at politics at some levels, politicos and their kids wouldn't make it to be as rich as they if they worked on their own or went into business. That's why they propagate politics as a family business, di nila magagawa yan in real industry or entrepreneurship IMO.

They may as well put up sign on all QC boundaries.

"Welcome to QC, Squatters, tUloY pOwhzzz. (with matching smiling picture of your congressman, councilor, mayor bistek and vice mayor...)

    exactly

the same way capitalists train their kids to be capitalists, politicians train their kids to be politicians

it's their way of making a living

people fight to become mayor, congressman, etc no coz they wanna serve the public (fighting to serve the public? haha funny no?)

they run coz they gotta make a living

kaya nagpapatayan mga yan during election campaign

    kasi hanapbuhay ang pinaglalaban dyan

It's like paying for the stupidity of these squatters. Watch how many businesses and home-owners avoid QC now.

    Too much pro-poor-mentality/anti-progress policies.

great. that will attract urban poor from other cities

meron incentive to move to QC

hope other mayors will follow HB's lead (even do better than HB. like housing + food allowance hehe) para lumipat mga squatter sa ibang city
