Two little-known congressmen are in the list of the 10 richest members of the House of Representatives, dislodging outgoing Reps. Juan Ponce "Jack" Enrile Jr. of Cagayan and Antonio Floirendo Jr. of Davao del Norte.

Sixty four-year-old Rodolfo Valencia of Oriental Mindoro, a realtor by profession, reported a net worth of P150.4 million as of December 2006. He declared P351.5 million worth of assets and P201.1 million in liabilities. He placed fifth on the list.

Enrile, son of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, placed ninth in the 2005 summary report of the statement of assets and liabilities filed by House members. Enrile declared a net worth of P93.9 million in 2005. Enrile’s SAL for 2006 was not immediately available. Floirendo used to rank 10th with P92.3 million.

Senatorial candidate Sorsogon Rep. Francis Escudero said he is worth P7.1 million, while fellow opposition senatorial candidate Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano reported a net worth of P17.3 million.

Tarlac Rep. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III revealed a net worth of P14.3 million; Bukidnon Rep. Juan Miguel Zubiri, P43.2 million; Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay, the biggest spender on TV ads among senatorial bets, is reportedly worth P29.9 million.

Speaker Jose de Venecia reported a net worth of P60.5 million, President Arroyo’s son, 38-year-old Juan Miguel or Mikey, of Pampanga’s second district, ranked 15th with P89.6 million.

South Cotabato Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio, who beat boxing champion Manny Pacquiao in the congressional race, reported a net worth of P16.8 million.

Hindi na ako nagtataka pa kung bakit ganyan. Siyempre pumasok sila sa politics para sa salapi at kapangyarihan. Uto uto lang ang maniniwala na ang isang tao ay tumatakbo sa serbisyo publiko upang tulungan ang sambayanan pilipino.

Kahit sino pa ang tumakbo para sa gobyerno ay ganyan ang mangyayari. Ganun talaga ang buhay hindi na iyan mababago pa simula noong bago pa ipananganak si Jesus Kristo.
