August 18th, 2007 08:20 AM #13Wealthy congressman offers P8 million for doomed Porsche
By Jess Diaz
Saturday, August 18, 2007 After seeing on national television two expensive BMW sport utility vehicles reduced to a pile of scrap metal, a wealthy congressman fond of SUVs is pleading with the government not to destroy a smuggled Porsche waiting for “condemnation” in Subic.
“They should not destroy the Porsche twin-turbo SUV. I will offer P8 million for it if it is auctioned,” Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez told reporters.
He did not say if he will use the V-8 twin-turbo he is casting a moist eye on in Metro Manila traffic. His coveted SUV is like a race car which can go from 0 to 100 mph in under 10 seconds.
In going to his district and moving around the metropolis, Suarez, who lives in the affluent Forbes Park enclave in Makati City, has been alternately using a Toyota Lexus SUV and a Nissan Armada. The two SUVs are worth at least P10 million.
Suarez said the twin-turbo unit he wants to buy is similar to the controversial Porsche Cayenne that boxing champion Manny Pacquiao brought into the country, for which the boxing idol paid P1 million in duties and taxes, an amount that was later found to be short by about P500,000.
“That twin-turbo is worth $80,000 to $100,000 in the States, or P4 million to P4.6 million. If you compute duties and taxes at P4 million, it should sell here for at least P8 million. If they sell it to me, the government would be richer by P8 million,” he said.
In contrast, Pacquiao’s twin-turbo Cayenne was declared as a slightly used SUV and given a much lower value of $50,000. The boxing champion used it for a few weeks in California before shipping it here.
After nosy journalists discovered that the amount of duties and taxes Pacquiao paid was short, Customs Commissioner Napoleon Morales grudgingly levied an additional P500,000.
The twin-turbo Porsche is among several luxury vehicles that a government wrecking crew led by Finance Secretary Margarito Teves did not destroy last Thursday in Subic. The units’ consignees have questioned the decision to crush them into scrap metal.
The remaining vehicles include an Armada similar to the one Suarez is using.
Only five of the 18 vehicles destroyed by Teves and other officials can be considered luxury vehicles. The rest were Estima, Lucida and other Toyota variants that Subic auctioneers convert from right-hand drive to left-hand drive and sell for less than P200,000 each.
Asked yesterday to comment on the destruction of the vehicles, Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. said he supported President Arroyo’s decision to have the smuggled SUVs destroyed.
“That was a big psychological boost to the campaign against smuggling,” he said.
He said he would leave it to the authorities to choose between destroying the remaining units or selling them through public bidding to generate much-needed revenues for the government.
However, De Venecia said regardless of what they do with the vehicles, Customs officials should prosecute those who smuggled them and bureaucrats conniving with them in their illegal activities.
“That is the only way to stop smuggling,” he stressed.

Sa tingin ko, ang mga makikinaban diya ang mga BIR collectors, assessors.
Sigurado, mag-offer ng "compromise" yan.
Noble cause, masked by selfish desires. Mga hypocrite talaga.

Kaya pala sa panahon ni Kristo, kasama ang mga taga-BIR sa mga makasalanan, like in the verse, "He dines with tax collectors and other sinners."
