Tignan natin kung magiging totoo ang prediction ni Ramos
Source:ABS CBN News.comFVR: Arroyo’s days are numbered
Former president Fidel V. Ramos warned that President Arroyo’s days in office are numbered following the executive clemency she signed to release deposed president Joseph Estrada who was convicted of plunder by the Sandiganbayan.
This was the gist of Ramos’s column which is set to be published by the Manila Bulletin on Sunday.
Before leaving for China on Thursday, Ramos asked if Mrs. Arroyo was "under that kind of pressure now?"
"Meaning time pressure? Yes, she is. You read my Sunday Bulletin," Ramos said.
The Philippine Star reported that Ramos drew parallelism between the case of Estrada and former South Korean Presidents Chun Do Hwan and Roh *** Woo, who both admitted guilt and wrongdoing while in office before being granted executive clemency.
Ramos said Estrada has not admitted any guilt and maintained his innocence despite having been convicted and sentenced by the Sandiganbayan.
Ramos’s statement carried much weight particularly since he is the chair-emeritus of the Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party, one the powerful parties allied with Mrs. Arroyo.
He however admitted that the relationship between Lakas-CMD and Mrs. Arroyo’s camp already have cracks.
"The cracks have been there!" he said.
Since she granted pardon to Estrada, Mrs. Arroyo, he said, should also try to pardon Army Major General Carlos Garcia who is detained and is facing plunder charges.
"I can predict, a big part of the armed forces will object to any pardon of Gen. Garcia considering the corruption and plunder that has taken place and I am more familiar with the possible reaction of the armed forces and the national police," he said.
For his part, Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno said that indeed, President Arroyo’s stay in power is numbered.
"Well unang-una bilang na talaga hanggang 2010. Ngayon kung sinuman ang susubok na baguhin ang ating Constitution or ibahin iyung batas hinggil diyan at hindi sundin iyung nararapat na termino ng ating pangulo, ay siyempre mananagot din sa batas," Puno said.
(Well first of all it’s really numbered – till 2010. Now whoever wants to try to change the Constitution or change the law on that and not follow the term of the president will surely answer to the law.)
