“WE will put Cha-cha in the back burner. We will let the people decide when to change the Constitution”—President Macapagal-Arroyo, Dec. 14, 2006.
“We cannot say we are backing off [from] … Charter change”—Malacañang, Dec. 18, 2006.
PERHAPS it is too much to expect GMA to remain true to her word, considering her past record. But it took years before she somersaulted in her promise not to run for reelection, and notwithstanding her promise, she ran. It took months after her “I am sorry” speech on the Garci tapes before she somersaulted again. Now only four days separated her promise to drop Cha-cha and the statement that Cha-cha will ride again.
But what did you expect? She is getting more adept at this despicable vice. When GMA is finally booted out of the Palace where she doesn’t belong, she can find a job as an acrobat.
I warned everyone about that, didn’t I? I said that like Frankenstein’s monster and Dracula, the Cha-cha monster would rise from the dead and surprise us all, and therefore we should not let our guard down. Still it came as a surprise that the turnaround came so soon.
Lying and doublespeak have become a plague in Malacañang since GMA moved in. It has become an addiction worse than drug addiction, smoking and alcoholism. The people there, it seems, lie because they cannot help it. It has become a habit.
