Many aren't sure if Pope Francis took either St Francis Asisi or St. Francis Xavier, a co-founder of the Jesuit Order. Or both!
Pope Francis may also be making a nod to his Jesuit faith by choosing this particular name, Mr. Ventresca said.
St. Francis Xavier was one of the founders of the Jesuit order, and he too placed a great emphasis on missionary work.
Both St. Francis and Xavier “were in their own respects humble, obedient to the church, modest, both of them were also missionaries,” he said. “There’s this notion of the new evangelism going outward rather than going down and worrying about structural and organizational reform. The accent is going to be on going outward with confidence and with humility to preach the gospel.”
Popes have no criteria by which to select their names, but they can and often do consider their names carefully and use them as a vehicle for which to communicate their vision for the papacy under their leadership.Last edited by Monseratto; March 14th, 2013 at 10:52 AM.
