April 25th, 2008 09:30 AM #1disappointed ako dito sa cheaper medicines law naaprove na sa congress with provisions on 1. generics only and 2. creation of a board to dictatate prices.

Nothing new there. Lobbyist are everywhere, money talks, money is power and unfortunately if you don't have the money you're out.

Ano laban ng isang 3rd world govt sa Big Pharma?
E ang US healthcare system hawak nila e...
------------------------
Any price control is economic suicide. Be it basic goods or fuel or medicine.
Just research what happened to Zimbabwe when their president imposed price control on food.

dahil garantisado it will not level the playing field at ganun pa din price nyan lahat mahal

I didnt research on why medicine in India is cheap but i think i know why...
(Cipla, Ranbaxy, etc)
Big pharma has to compete with them.
Big Pharma can't price their medicine too high.
Dito sa Pinas, big pharma has almost no competition.
----------
Thailand... meron sila problema ngayon.
Thailand wont allow branded HIV drugs yata, only generics.
Well, no problem with firstline HIV drugs. There are cheap generic versions.
But when HIV becomes resistant to the firstline drugs, patients have to switch to second line drugs which are newer drugs and still under patent protection.
So now big pharma is withholding their newer HIV drugs from Thailand.
Thai HIV patients can't get access to 2nd line drugs.
That's what happens pag kinalaban mo ang big pharma.
-------------
Clarify ko lang after some reading...
Thailand practices patent-breaking.
They have a law that allows manufacturing of generic versions of drugs that are under patent.
And that pissed off big pharma and caused strained relations between the Thai govt and the US and EU.
Thailand's move to provide cheaper drugs for its people comes at a cost.Last edited by uls; April 25th, 2008 at 01:13 PM.

IIRC they're with AVID. The reported numbers in the TG article are from CAMPI.
