First number is total number of wheels. Second number is total number of driven wheels.

4X2 = four wheels with two wheels being driven by the engine.
4X4 = all wheels can be driven.

In truck-speak, 6-wheeled (dual tire) trucks are just 4x4s. 10-wheeled trucks are 6x6s. When counting driven tires, dual tires are just counted as a single driving wheel. Check out any magazine with a dual-tired Dodge Ram or Ford Super Duty being tested... These 6-wheeler trucks will just have a 4x4 sticker on the side and not a 6x6.

    Amacatan,

Are you damn serious about your question or just making fun of this forum by asking something elementary?

sorry ha. pero i'm serious about my question :?

so bottom line, 4x4 is the same as 4WD or AWD, and 4x2 is the same as 2WD

pansin ko lang na 4x4 ang madalas gamitin pag sa mga trucks or SUVs eh kaysa 4WD. tapos pag sa mga sedan o race cars naman e 4WD kaysa 4x4.

thanks anyway. now i know what it means

4x4 and 4wd are almost synonymous. All-wheel drive is often reserved for vehicles (mostly cars and some vans) that are full-time four wheel drive and equipped with only a single-speed transfer (no low range) case-- i.e., Subarus, Audis, some Porsches, Lamborghini Diablos, etc.

What does 4X4 or 4X2 mean?
