the V refers to the arrangement of the cylinders in the engine while the number refers to the total number of cylinders in the engine. the more cylinders (which usually means more displacement), the greater the power and torque in general.

a Honda Civic has an inline-4 engine: viewed from the top, the cylinders are arranged in a straight line: O-O-O-O

a V6 engine has 6 cylinders arranged in two banks of three cylinders:

    0-|-0
    0-|-0
    0-|-0

the V-configuration is used primarily for packaging purposes: it is compact.

there are certain slight advantages and disadvantages to V engines and inline engines.

Ok thanks for the very informative answer.

I was comparing specs, most pick-ups pala in-line 4 cylinder engines. Also most are 8 valve except for the Ranger which is 12 valve, giving it the edge I guess in power and torque.

Nice to have a V6 or V8 ride kaso grabe ang consumo like the Expedition ng bos ko 4 km/L lang.

kiper18::: 3 valves per cylinder. Usually 2 intake valves magkatabi then at the opposite 1 exhaust valve. Mas maliit ang valves ng 12 valve engine as suppose to the normal 8 valve engine which has 1 intake and 1 exhaust valves.

    additional sa sagot ni mbt...

v6 and v8 engines are easier to balance than in-line 6 or in-line 8 engines, shorter kasi ang crankshaft. also, the longer the crankshaft of the in-line engine, the stronger it has to be as the longer length leads to bigger angular deflections. shorter din ang V engines so they cost less to manufacture (less metal is needed to cast the block).
