The BMW X5 can still fall under this forum because it is still classified and marketed as an SUV.
The term SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) was just coined by the marketing people at BMW because the X5 was not designed (read: not tough enough) to fullfill most SUV duties like off-roading and towing.
But, it still competes with conventional SUV's in the marketplace.

The X5 does not share the same chassis as the 5 series and is built from the ground up using the 4.4L/3.0 liter engine found in the 5 and 7 series. It's not fair to compare the X5 and RX400. The only place the RX has the X5 beat is with price
