I know most of you guys like a RAV 4 but are forced to buy that CR-V instead because of its lower price (over 300,000 pesos difference).

Well, the RAV 4 is priced like that because of 2 things: It is brought here CBU (Completely Built Up) from Japan, and it is four wheel drive and this classified as an SUV (which has the highest passenger vehicle tax). Sadly, Toyota ain't fast enough to take action when Honda launched its new CR-V which attracted many buyers.

Remedy, a front wheel drive RAV 4 that is assembled here. If Toyota does that and prices it at around P1M, many buyers will be attracted. Even I may become an owner someday.

    hmm..

ang nagpamahal sa rav4 ay ung 4wd option..

the ford escape xlt 4wd is priced at P1.27M

pero kapag 2wd ang kinuha mo..

    P200T will be slashed right-away..

both variants are locally assembled here.

    peace.

I was saying this a long long time ago! The RAV4's fulltime 4wd makes good use of the 3SFE's power. Unlike in the Corona, where all you get is wheelspin. :D Unfortunately, taxes make owning one difficult. At 1.3M, konting dagdag na lang, Pajero na. The best thing toyota could do is offer both and let the buyer decide :D

imo, bringing in a FWD RAV4 (which not everyone may want) is not the solution. stopgap lang yan... the real culprit is the gov'ts idiotic tax scheme. yun yung kailangan ayusin, hindi yung avoiding the problem imo

I may be missing something but is there a survey done on the usability of a 4WD as oppose to 2WD in the Philippines driving condition? Realistically, sportutes such as the one manufactured by Honda and Toyota are meant for extreme weather conditions and not for hardcore offroading (sportutes manufactured by other auto makers such as the Vitara and Liberty might do up to medium offroading). The Philippines, having a tropical weather all year long might not have much use for 4WDs which Toyota may have missed, but this is only my opinion. Also, majority of the SUV drivers and owners around the world like SUVs because of its high seating configuration. This allows unobstructed view of the road. Base on experience with my previous Civic, nakakainis talaga to be on the same lane with a huge SUV lalo na kung liliko ka. You can not see the oncoming traffic from the road you are merging :x

Or am I being practical again?

    Thanks 8)

    Macky,

yes i agree that the local market doesn't really need anything more than 2wd in general... however that was beside the point i was trying to make. i was saying that bringing in a cheaper FWD version of the rav4 to circumvent the tax laws is a stopgap solution... dapat yung laws yung baguhin, so that it won't need to be circumvented sneakily (which defeats the purpose of the tax law) in the first place

let the consumer choose, i say

I get your point, believe me. What I brought up is usability. Case in point, mas mahal ang diesel kesa gas sa US because the government wants their consumer to use gas due to environment issues blahblahblah. If you think about it, they have a point. Maybe, just maybe, the Philippine government, knowing that we have narrower roads, is promoting the use of small cars kaya medyo unfair nga yung taxation system natin if we're into huge trucks. Just a point to ponder.....

Macky::: That may probably be true. Well at least i hope it is. If it were, thats a good sign coz, for better or worse, at least someone in the govt is trying to use their coconuts :D However, i personally feel that they just want to squeeze a couple (thousands) more peso from us. Anyways, taxes have little effect. People who want these big SUVs could and would easily pay the premium :D Pare, isang damukal ang expedition dito sa Maynila ngayon :D

Small SUVs like the RAV 4 are not designed to conquer the toughest terrain, even in 4WD form. The 2WD has better acceleration and economy, and it is the ideal SUV for those who only want to ride high and get to some places cars can't. 4WD versions go a bit further, but if it's hardcore off-roading you're looking for, then get a Hummer or Range Rover.

spukulutum :: YUP!!! Fulltime 4WD. The 3Door RAV4 is quite quite fun to drive. I have a 97 model.

The 2003 RAV4 SV(?) is priced at P970k with 2WD, a 1.8L engine w/o VVTi and 2WD. Pwede na rin siguro. I have yet to see the interior trim though. But if its anywhere near the J series............ i just might sell some assets and bite (chomp!)

Guwapo talaga RAV4 (or RAV2 hehehe) compared to any other Sport Cute around.

based sa specs, konti lang naman difference ng 1.8L and 2.0L ng toyota. yung 1.8L engine used in the new RAV2 is taken from the altis ata.

Otep:: ahehehhehe!!! Sabi nga ng ilan.... "Its not when you get there but HOW you get there". Kaya when using the Paje, leave 20 minutes earlier!:lol::lol:

mbt::: i guess only a review can answer the question as to the 1.8L's power :D But at 970K, the SV looks less of a bargain compared to the CRV. On second thought, buying a 2nd hand 4WD RAV4 is better IMHO. Guwapo ang Gen2 RAV inside and out....... but the 3Door Gen1 is still "THE" ultimate highway toy for me
