At least the early Korean copycat cars were actually licensed versions rather than blatant knock offs allowing them to have support from the original manufacturer.

I'm not holding my breath on this one. Lahat ng brands ng hinandle ng company na iyan tumaob, eh.

Nexus sales Agent: "esyubi, esyubi, pirated, esyubi ...Landcruiser? Isuzu Axiom? Meron tayo niyan..."

The Nexus Hover CUV ay nasa 1.4M ang 4X2 at 1.480M ang 4X4.
Thats a lot for a pirated chop chop SUV. For that money, you can a lot of other SUVs(Escape, Grand Vitara, Sorento, CR-V, X-trail etc).

Manila Bulletin March 2, 2006 (Thursday). It's on page 12 of the main section. The 2 motoring columnists who were beaten up were Vernon Sarne and Ira Panganiban. The incident happened during the Nexus launching last Tuesday night. Apparently, APC president - Paul Rodriguez was reprimanding Sarne for his critical review of Nexus before the columnist was beaten up by the APC group, Ira Panganiban tried to pacify the group but was beaten up as well.

If that's story true, I'd have second thought about buying any vehicle from teh APC group. I can just imagine how'd they'd treat customer complaints.

    Export push yields improved quality

Great Wall's Hover CUV model has a maximum speed of 160kph and a fuel consumption of 9L/100km. Price is $11,000 to $14,000.

SUV makers in China are focusing on better design, technology and performance to help boost their overseas sales.

China's SUV exports have been limited as makers cater mainly to the fast-growing domestic market. However, with the intense local competition and the large production capacity on hand, several companies are now working to expand their overseas reach.

Suppliers currently export mainly to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America and Eastern Europe. They are set to boost shipments to these markets because the low $7,000 to $15,000 price range of their SUVs has been attracting more orders. In addition, makers will reduce or maintain prices in the next few months despite the rising cost of steel.

Although manufacturers have not been able to completely move beyond their price advantage, particularly for low-end and midrange models, efforts to improve product quality are under way.

Companies are looking to the US, Japan, Europe and Germany, where automotive giants are based, for R&D collaboration, expertise, technology and components. They have also been complying with national emission, fuel consumption and safety standards and are offering reliable aftersales service overseas.

For large suppliers, these steps may open doors to the US and the EU, where export success has been elusive because of the upscale market and the stringent safety and emission requirements.

A few of them already have a head start. Great Wall Motor Co. Ltd, a leading SUV maker and exporter, presented three of its models at the International Automobile Exhibition at Bologna, Italy last December. The company is planning to export to Western Europe, as well as North America.

However, it will still take a couple of years before China manufacturers become major global players with both a high quality and a low price edge.

Foshan Nanhai Fudi Auto Co. Ltd said the industry's SUV shipments will increase even though they are off to a slow start. The company exports about 30 units per month.

Beiqi Foton Motor Co. Ltd intends to increase its export ratio from 2 to 30 percent by 2010. In line with this, the company will expand its production capacity by setting up factories in New Zealand, South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Great Wall is hoping that exports will account for 50 percent of its sales in 2008.

    Export strategies

To be able to compete internationally, SUV makers in China are introducing advanced technology and designs and are opting for better-quality components.

In addition to its Automobile Engineering Institute for developing new products, Beiqi Foton has R&D divisions in Japan and Europe. It also adopts molding equipment from Japan and Mitsubishi rear axles.

Nanhai Foshan Fudi has hired a designer from Detroit, which is home to major US automakers, for the SUV bodies of its future releases. The company is planning to set up an automobile body technology and research center in Guangdong province.

Great Wall turns to experts from Germany for engine production and collaborates with companies in Japan and Europe on body and chassis design. It uses imported testing equipment such as Cosmo from Japan, AVL from Austria, Mahr from Germany and Poli from Italy.

The company also equips some of its SUVs with Mitsubishi engines and Bosch anti-lock braking systems that adjust to uneven and slick surfaces.

Moreover, Great Wall ensures that the plastic parts, rubber components and auto lamps it sources for Russia-bound SUVs are suitable to the country's cold weather.

Similarly, Zhejiang Gonow Automobile Co. Ltd applies distinct surface treatments that can resist low temperature and rust for Russia exports and withstand hot weather for shipments to Africa.

The company adopts technology from Germany and Japan in developing the engine, transmission box and chassis.

    Meeting standards

Compliance with national standards has allowed China SUV suppliers to enhance their ability to meet international requirements in key export markets.

Most makers already offer EU II-compliant models primarily because China's emission standards are based on these European regulations. For instance, the latest releases from Zhejiang Zhongneng Industrial Group meet the CO2 limit of 2.2g/km. The EU II parameters were implemented nationwide in 2003.

Large metropolitan areas are adopting the directive's stricter and newer versions. Beijing, in particular, started following EU III requirements in 2005. Beijing-based Beiqi Foton develops models that conform to EU II and EU III standards.

All China-made vehicles are set to be EU III-compliant by 2007.

Shanghai Wanfeng Coach Manufacturer Co. Ltd uses a multipoint electronic fuel injection engine, model WF491Q-ME (4Y), to meet EU II and EU III specifications. For this, the company draws technology from Toyota.

In July of last year, the fuel consumption of passenger vehicles was also regulated.

Moreover, China has testing centers for finished SUVs. Although models for export undergo more rigid tests, these still do not match EU safety standards.

Because of this, Great Wall sends its products, which are absorbed in Eastern Europe, to an EU testing organization. But generally, only a few local SUVs are tested under international bodies.

    Sales and services

Some SUV makers are also devising ways to provide reliable aftersales service for export-bound vehicles.

Zhejiang Gonow's models come with spare parts and components. The company also plans to set-up service stations in regions where there are more than 100 of its vehicles.

For key markets, Beiqi Foton delegates technicians to assist wholesalers and agents. Employees in the company's overseas business department are also subjected to rigorous training.

Great Wall has 4S stores in the Middle East. These four-in-one service centers provide information, sales, supply and maintenance and repair services.
