    Tamaraw, Fiera revival sought

    Government is prodding vehicle assemblers into reviving Tamaraw, Fiera and Harabas-like utility vehicles for export to less developed economies like Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Africa and East Timor.

    Cristino L. Panlilio, Board of Investments (BOI) managing head, said the agency will likely come up with an "embellished" automotive export program (AEP), or a motor vehicle development program (MVDP) II geared at encouraging exports.

    The spun off MVDP would hopefully address the weaknesses of the AEP, which attracted only one company, Ford Group Philippines, into the export of locally assembled vehicles.

    According to Panlilio, less classy multipurpose vehicles like Tamaraw which was developed by Toyota, Fiera by Ford and Harabas have a local market which can serve as a launching pad for exports.

    He said local assemblers are facing stiff competition from Thailand, especially for its pick-up vehicles, in the export market.

    Other assemblers have shunned exporting due to the additional costs in transporting parts and components.

    Panlilio said due to the size of the local market today, the parts manufacturing industry has dwindled, thus diminishing its ability to supply assemblers. Local sales have dropped from a record of 160,000 to just about 100,000.

    "The MVDP II is the next stage of development of the industry. While we need to expand the local market, we have to provide the incentives to encourage export," Panlilio said.

    He said this would also lift the capacity of the five major assemblers from 60 percent.

    Leading assembler Toyota Motor Philippines Corp (TMP) would only bite if the local assemblers are able to serve the local market first.

    "We have to satisfy the domestic market as our base before we go to export," said Rommel Gutierrez, company vice president.

    Gutierrez said TMP can increase its capacity provided there is a "proper environment,"

    TMP is batting for "production-based" incentives by rewarding players in the completely-knocked down operations proportionate to their output.

    This encourages assemblers to increase their CKD assembly.

    LOL! ... Doesn't this sound exactly like the "discussion" we have been having with Romski etc? ...

    I suggested that the best thing to jump start the MVDP (or was it the "Pinoy Car" thingie) project is to start with building the old Tamaraw under license from Toyota?

    This would give the people hands on experience in assembling a real AUV while making a small profit as well.

    How about lower the price of the crosswind? Sounds the same? More reliable diesel engine, pang harabas and many more. hehe.

    Won't help. The point of the project is to make the entire vehicle (or as much of it locally). The rounded panels of the crosswind is simply not possible without direct support from the original manufacturer.

    The iconic Tamaraw with its folded corners & simple basic mechanicals would be simpler to make with the basic industrial technology we already posses.

    And it could be fitted with any engine you can throw at it. You can make it run on gasoline, diesel, LPG, etc.

    Although personally I was hoping for something like the Tamaraw FX model to be pushed back into production with a choice mix of gasoline, basic diesel & turbo-diesel engines.

    MANILA, Philippines - Local vehicle manufacturers should revive the old Tamaraw and Fiera for export in order to boost the production of Philippine made vehicles and to attract more investments in the auto industry, the Board of Investments (BOI) said.

    In an interview after his first meeting with players of the local auto industry, Board of Investments (BOI) managing head Cristino L. Panlilio said  that he is urging local manufacturers to revive the Tamaraw and the Fiera in order to compete with the pick ups.

    The Tamaraw and the Fiera were highly popular during the seventies and the eighties.

    “This can be the cheaper version of the pick-up. We can sell this to Vietnam, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Africa,” Panlilio, who is also the undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), said.

    Panlilio said that the government and the private sector must work together to push the local car manufacturing because the industry’s manufacturing plants are operating 60 percent below capacity. When asked if the local industry was supportive of the idea, Panlilio said the players he met with Friday afternoon did not raise any objections. Among those he met with were Michinobu Sugata, president of Toyota Motor Philippines and Henry Co, chairman of Ford Group Philippines.

    Panlilio has been pushing for the creation of a supplement to the Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Development Plan (MVDP). Panlilio has earlier said that he would like to make an MVDP which will cater specifically to exporters. He said the MVDP II will be ready before the end of the year. However, approval may take longer given that the consent of the House of Representatives is necessary because higher incentives will be given to exporters.

    Panlilio said that the industry players that he met with during the closed door meeting Friday afternoon were receptive of the idea of the MVDP II. “They offered no objections.”

    However, in a separate interview, TMP vice president Rommel Gutierrez said that the MVDP II is not necessary because the domestic market has not been saturated. “We can increase production if there is proper demand but we have not saturated the domestic base.”

    For Toyota, he said their exports will still be parts and components and not vehicles. Of the players in the local auto industry, only Ford has exports. The Ford chairman, who was also at the meeting, refused to confirm if they will be increasing their capacity should there be more incentives for exports.

    Last week, the BOI announced that they will be making the MVDP II specifically for exporters. The MVDP II will offer bigger incentives and tax perks to firms who will choose to sell locally made vehicles overseas. The MVDP II is separate from the Comprehensive MVDP.

    I dont know why they want to revive so badly the Tamaraw and Fiera from the 70's to 80's. I mean what country would buy those old tech ancient relics when they can better with surplus or have better models in their local shores? Vietnam and Indonesia are better or have overtaken us (if they haven't already). This is not to mention China made vehicles.

    Why don't they try selling another ancient relic abroad, in the form of the L300 Deluxe and Exceed. The L300 is so much better than the aforementioned 70's to 80's era Tamaraw and Fiera. Then again, are we the only country left building and using them. If Toyota revived the Tamaraw FX from the mid 90's or the Revo than whatever they are proposing.

    dapat for use muna sa pinas bago export.. how other countries take the product if we the manufacturer will not use it.. maganda itong replacement sa mga bulok na jeep.. the body should be lighter yet sturdy para fuel efficient unlike na mga jeep na solid at ang bigat.. kaya yung driver nagrereklamo wala kinikita kasi yung jeep nya hindi efficient

    tapos ibahin nila setup.. dapat side passenger loading tapos rear passenger unloading para hindi nagsasalubong yung baba at sasakay.. saves time

    pati fiera gusto din nilang ibalik...e subsidize ng government yang tamaraw at fiera thing...e yung Beep nga (bus/jeep combined) di nga pumatok, or even air conditioned jeeps bihira lang tayo makakita, eto pa kaya? I think TYT and Ford will never go back to that thing in the past...e pwede nga tayo magpa-assemble dyan sa pinakamalpit na talyer.

    Anfra kaya? Among these ito yata ang may pinaka-modern na design whether it be exterior or the underpinnings. All they have to do is perhaps make SWB and LWB versions and modernize it a bit like having a new front fascia, 70/30 split rear doors, front disc brakes, an efficient TURBO diesel engine (4JB1-T perhaps?), make available some optional features like power windows and locks as well as airconditioning and perhaps a new dashboard. If the creative people converting RHD vehicles in Subic can chop and remold dashboards of even vehicles intended as RHD only, I'm sure they can make a new one out of scratch, right?

    dyan talaga magaling ang pinoy, inuuna muna ang media saka government intervention, before presenting a prototype.

    why dont they just make a car that will marvel us at first look? is it really not that simple to understand.

    and better yet, bakit hindi sila magdala ng ford fiera or tamaraw dun sa vietnam/indonesia, kung may carshow man dun and survey. baka nga ni hindi alam ng mga tiga-vietnam/indonesia na bebentahan pala sila nito

    so what does this mean that they did not raise any objections? it's a go ba
    or they're just being diplomatic
