Just heard over the radio this morning...

An initial 150 buses will be converted to use CNG (compressed natural gas) next month. It is expected that there would be 3000 more that would be using CNG by the end of the year.

Price of CNG will be fixed for 7 years (around P14 / cubic meter).

hmmm...sana they can talk to most gas stations to offer refilling services for CNG buses. tingin ko yan ung pinakamalaking challenge

This is true. The Philippine government has been trying to plan for CNG use for years. Their plans only saw a glimmer of being put into play when the Malampaya plant opened. However, if they are betting their balls on the Malampaya plant, they better think again.

If I'm not mistaken, experts estimate that the gas from the Malampaya plant would not last as long as the government has been advertising. The government projects that the country would save on 47-49% on oil spending due to the output of the Malampaya plant. But since the government is planning for all sorts of things using the Malampaya gas, the demand might outweight the supply/output capabilities of the plan.

Since the Malampaya plant is a B-O-T project of Shell, I'd hold my bets off on that 7-year no-price-increase thing. Why? No matter what has been or would be said, that plant is still "a business", and like all businesses, Shell would want to make money on that one. The quicker, the better.

But hey, don't get me wrong. This is a great project. I just hope that some government screwball don't mess it up.

...i think they already did screw it up. di ba ibebenta na raw ung stake ng gov't sa malampayato a korean firm, tapos nagback out ang gov't 'coz the price wasn't right? ok na sana ung move na un , kaso i think they violated some right of first refusal/ek-ek with shell. expect lawsuits and countersuits to ensue.

Yes this project has a huge potential but the problem is will there be enough number of gas stations operators who would be willing to spend an additional cost for the refilling set-up of CNG?

I think this is our opportunity to maximize our use of Malampaya's output dapat tayo ang makinabang dito instead of our CNG's being sold by shell at a bargain price in other countries.

hindi yan masyadong malaking problem... since most bus companies have their own refilling stations inside their terminals.

The initial plan was to put a refilling station in Mamplasan along South superhiway. Ang problema, chicken and egg situation. Shell does not want to put up the station yet until bus companies start buying CNG buses. The initial line supposedly was Batangas-Manila-Batangas route.

    Compressed Natural Gas-run buses launched
First posted 12:52pm (Mla time) July 01, 2005

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo launched the first commercial bus using indigenous compressed natural gas (CNG) -- the government’s answer to the surging prices of oil. The buses will be powered by CNG, which will be sold at 14.50 per liter for the next seven years, 50 percent lower than diesel, which is 29.50 per liter, according to Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla.

The President, together with energy officials, members of the media; Canadian Ambassador Peter Sutherland; officials of Cummins Westport, the manufacturers of the CNG engines; and the Chinese delegation, Cummins' partners in manufacturing the CNG buses, took the inaugural ride to Luneta then back to Malacañang.

Lotilla said he expected the lower fuel cost to translate into lower bus fares. He added the use of this type of gas would also contribute to cleaner air.

“With the fuel cost much lower, relative to diesel, we expect they will be passing on the benefit to the passengers through lower fares,” he said in a news briefing in Malacañang.

The gas will be available initially at the Shell station in Mamplasan, Biñan town, Laguna province.

    ================================================== ======

P14.50/l, against diesel's P29.50/l.

until we have mobile CNG refilling stations in metro manila, we will not be seeing any CNG buses in the city soon. buses can only refill now in binan so it is logical that only the manila to binan buses will avail of this in the meantime.

there was a group that was committed to setting up mobile CNG refilling stations in various areas in metro manila pero naudlot due to (guess what?) .............. government corruption

privy ako sa istorya na ito but my lips are sealed, hehehehe

Its a good idea... One of the best project if it would push through. Pero definitely it would take years before it gets implemented... which is the usual norm for the Philippines.

Come to think of it meron na bang proyekto ang gobyerno na naging matino at walang nakinabang na iilan...

    Kaawa-awa naman ang Pilipinas...

the P14.50 is a subsidized rate. so its not going to maintain this rate for long. they say 7 years but it will be shorter. unless this is regulated by the government, the drive for profit will boost the price

however, there are other studies that claim that this is an overpriced cost also as shell bloated its development and construction costs. the organization i talked with said that the real cost could even be P9.00 / liter.

government should intervene to lower the cost and to keep it low not just for 7 years

likewisem, there are no concrete reports on the consumption per kilometer of CNG. government "experts" claim that it has the same km/l as diesel engines but fail to qualify which diesel engines.

bale wala rin ang cheap price of CNG if your km/l consumption is, say, 2km/l, using your CNG modified engines

    Guys,

Hinay lang sa banat....better get ur gossip or hearsays on the reliable sources b4 jumping on the conclusion..I've been reading this thread and was so frustrated for the wrong info proliferating here...on those mentioned info's i could say almost 90% were not true....
***MALAMPAYA reserves could last for more than the advertised 25 years..
***CNG is not being sold outside the Philippines purely used for Power generation and now on the Public Utility Buses.
***If not for Malampaya we could be in more serious economic situation now due to the more $$outflow to buy addtional OIL to maintain our AC,lights in Metro Manila and whole of Luzon.
***As of now there's no plan of distributing CNG to private user so no need to think of modifying your rides....also LPG is very different to CNG...LPG tank cannot hold the pressure of CNG * 275Bar.
***CNG refilling in daughter station In Mamplasan will be operational for sure before the beginning of 4th quarter of the year, and YES as planned the pilot proj.buses will be the Bats to Manila route, then later will further put additonal daughter station on some key Shell Gas station in Manila to cater for the EDSA plying CNG buses. hinde po dahil sa CORRUPTION kaya naudlot yung mga mobile refilling station sa Manila kundi more on the SAFETY aspect....CNG is not ur typical LPG...IBA po eto.

Sabihin nalang natin na I have genuine resources on these

    Waah, more information, hehe.

Siya nga pala, according to newspapers, they are also plans to create pipelines from the Batangas CNG station to stations in Metro Manila.

    Any news about it?

well that wouldn't be the case here as MALAMPAYA GAS is a Sweet one. meaning with a very low amount of H2S..this may be the cause of the rotten egg exhaust smells....Malampaya CNG in it's raw state is odorless ..they will have to add some Mercaptans on it..for safety reason for identification of Leaks. compare to the other fossil fuels...this is the cleanest of them all i mean the Natural Gas...next sa mga Fuel Cell vehicle which only emits water.
