MOTORISTS beware. Even in the dead of night, stick to your designated lanes.
The Metro Manila Development Authority has made the "yellow lane" system on major thoroughfares effective 24 hours a day.
Previously, the system, which identifies the proper lanes where each kind of vehicle should be, was enforced from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Traffic Operations Center director Angelito Vergel de Dios said one of the objectives in enforcing the lane assignments is to prevent or minimize late-night accidents, which tend to happen when speeding motorists weave in and out of the various lanes of major thoroughfares.
Vergel de Dios said that by making vehicles stick to their proper lanes, they would be forced to travel more slowly and are less prone to accidents.
The yellow lane is for buses only and actually encompasses two lanes: the first lane, which is closest to the curb, is the loading and unloading area, while the second lane is for buses who wish to move on.
The third lane is for cargo trucks and provincial buses, while the fifth and sixth lanes are for private vehicles.
Violators of the system will be fined 300 pesos.
Vergel de Dios said that while the MMDA's traffic enforcers stay on their posts up to 10 p.m. only, motorcycle-riding enforcers are deployed 24-hours a day and could catch violators during the night or early morning.
Earlier, MMDA officials have said that when motorists stop weaving in and out of various lanes, their travel time would be cut by half an hour.
