the answers to high gas prices?

for those who want SUVs but not willing to pay so much gassing up considering the high gas prices, Toyota is coming out with these:

lexus RX400h

3.3L V6 mated with electric engine producing 268hp
fuel efficiency ratings:27mpg highway (8.7L/100km) and 21mpg city (7.6L/100km) or 29mpg combined (8.1L/100km)

the US will get 24,000 400h but already, 13,000 pre-orders have been received. toyota will also allocate 48,000 highlander hybrids for the US, 150,000 have already made reservations.
looks like toyota have 2 winners in the pipeline.

I hope they'll bring in the hybrids here. Mahal na ng gas. But is it possible? Will a Hybrid Car work in our extreme road conditions?

The Hybrids would even work so much sa driving condition sa Pinas because of frequent stops. Braking would charge the batteries of these hybrids. Although it is still really disputable whether you can actually save so much when you spend so much more to pay for these hybrids if you drive only 10-20 miles in a day. Undoubtedly, if you travel farther than that everyday, you'll be saving some, but not a lot.

The difference between a regular LEXUS RX and hybrid type is around $7000-10,000, depending on the accessories/add-ons. The gas consumption of a regular RX is 19/25 MPG(City/highway, SOURCE: CLICK HERE!! ), while the HYBRID has 21/27 MPG(city/highway-per article given by the thread starter).

Given all these facts, average mileage american drives around 12,000 miles/year with average/gallon price of $2.10(Massachusetts):

If only city driving:
REGULAR RX: 12,000 miles/year with 19 MPG=631Gallons/year, then multiply this with the price,$2.10/gal would result to $1,326.
HYBRID RX: 12,000 miles/year with 21 MPG= 571 gallons/year, multiplied with price/gallon, $2.10, would result to $1,199.10

If only highway driving:
REGULAR RX: 12,000 miles/year with 25MPG= 480 gallons/year, then multiplied with the price/gallon, $2.10 would come out as $1,008.00.
HYBRID RX: 12,000 miles/year with 27MPG= 444 gallons/year, multiplied with the price/gallon, $2.10, result to $933.32.

So, for an average driving in a year between a regular RX and the HYBRID, this is how much you can save:

City Driving: $1326(REGULAR RX)-$1199.10(HYBRID)=$126.90/YEAR.
Highway Driving: $1008(REGULAR RX)-$933.32(HYBRID)= $74.68/YEAR.

City Driving:
Regular RX- 100,000 miles/19MPG=5263 Gallons x $2.10/Gal = $11,052.64.

Regular RX- 100,000 miles/25mpg=4,000 gallons x $2.10/gal = $8,400.00

To sum-up after 100,000 miles, the difference of how much you would have spent on gas between a regular RX to the HYBRID would be:

City DRIVING: $11,052.64(REGULAR RX)-$9999.99(HYBRID)= $1,052.65
Highway DRIVING: $8,400(REGULAR RX)-$7,777.77(HYBRID)= $622.23

If you'd ask me if these figures are good enough to convince me to get a hybrid as the answer to the rising cost of gas? I think you know my answer to that question!! Why would I spend $7,000 more on a car that saves me a mere $200/year that I'm just going to be driving for the next 5-7 years anyway? I'd rather just cut to 2 lattes/day from 3 and I'd save more than that!! he he he!! But I heard that there is a tax-break for those getting these HYBRIDS! I think a main obstacle ng hybrid dito ay yung recharging phase.

Stop and go ang traffic natin, we dont usually generate enough speed to brake a long period of time to facilitate the charging of the cells.

In addition, yung point ni CyberDoc is the same as most Car and Driver/Automobile editors, the cost of the hybrid will NEVER offset the price of fuel, kahit mas madami kang gaso ginagamit, you'll never "save" the amount of money kung kinompute mo yung difference ng standard gas model to a hybrid. Main advantage lang ng hybrid really is your earth-green-ness concience.

OT: I think it will be useless in the Phil to get the hybird just to become environmental friendly. The less contribution of emission for hybrid cars will not be enough to compensate those smoke belching jeeps and buses.

Actually getting a hybrid SUV kinda defeats the purpose of getting a hybrid vehicle in the first place. A hybrid vehicle (gas-electric or diesel-electric) works best in smaller vehicles like in a Civic or similar class of vehicles.

Anyway, I do support hybrid vehicles as one of our possible answers to the rising cost of fuel. It does save fuel costs in city driving (stop & go) but no savings when driven on highway conditions. Even if the cost of hybrid cars is slightly more expensive than conventional cars, the lower operating costs and lower pollution are good enough reasons to get one.

The answer to high prices? Drive smaller fuel efficient cars, as much as possible car pool, take public transport and no unnecessary trips. I don't think a hybrid SUV is the answer.

yup. Smaller cars is the BEST way.

I hope that some hybrid tech makes it to lower end models in the near future, like the automatic engine-off/engine-on thing, as well as cylinder-shut-off technology. I'm not too keen on regenerative braking unless they drastically improve the current systems. A lot of cars tested with regenerative brakes take quite a bit longer to stop than regular cars... and that's not good at all.

In China, you can see lots of people riding on electric scooters. Great for relatively short trips around the neighborhood.
