I plan to have our old and trusty Tamaraw FX undercoated so I ask around several gas stations for their undercoating material and cost.

Two gas stations told me they would use 3M undercoating material (1 gallon can). Hinahaluan daw muna ito ng 1 gallon din ng gasolina para maging 2 gallons para daw magkasya at lumabnaw for easy application. Ganito ba talaga ang paggamit ng 3M undercoating? Niloloko ba ako or their telling the truth?

Other gas stations which uses Shell Rustgard and Petron undercoating uses about 2 gallons for the size of my vehicle without mixing it with anything.

I need your comments kasi cheapest ang 3M undercoating. Thanks.

Open pa naman yata ang MARC Caltex, di ba? He'll be the best to comment on this.

Teka... is MARC Caltex one of the 2 gas stations in question? =)

yup, hinahaluan talaga ng gasoline yung 3M. 1:1 ang ratio, so tama yung 1gallon gaso for 1 gallon 3M undercoating.

Heard some shops use kerosene instead of gasoline but works just the same.

pangpalabnaw lang naman yung gasoline or kerosene para madali i-apply. madali naman kasing magevaporate ang gasoline so kapag tapos nang i-apply, mawawala din yung gasoline/kerosene.

I was quoted 2k for our Tamaraw.

Name applys to itself. Basically it is a chemical made of same quality or better than paints. Applied to the under parts of the vehicle that will need rust protection. Metal parts will not easily form rust if painted or coated with something to protect it.

eherm.. medyo butt-in ako pre. coatings, specially paints are my actual specialty
for clarification lang naman pre :D

the chemical used for undercoats is different from the material use for making your car paint. If you'll read the label on 3M's undercoating, it's made of a rubberized material. Such rubbery material, is not used as a resin for making car paints. and also, rubber is not better per se compared to the chemical used for making car paint. Minsan pa nga, may halong asphaltic material ang mga undercoats, hence the black color.

for undercoating kasi, the main purpose is to form a barrier against water and stones that hit the underside of your car - stones causes scratches under your car and those scratches are sometimes deep enough to break through the anti-corrosion coatings on the car metal,e.g., kung na dip coat or na-galvanize man yung metal na ginamit sa car body mo, pag nagasgas yon, exposed na yung bare metal. Once that happens, water, which carries oxygen, gets to the scratch, and starts the corrosion process - in layman's term kalawang. Corrosion is not brought about by water, it's the oxygen that's in the water.

Now why rubber or asphalt as undercoat material? rubber obviously is flexible, so good protection against stones, di sya madaling masira, tatalbog lang yung bato. plus, it hates water, di tumatagos ang tubig sa goma or sa asphalt. kaya yun those 2 factors combined make for a good and cheap undercoating material. added side effect pa nito, rubber deadens vibrations, -- di sya nagtatransmit ng sound kaya meron din syang noise insulation effect.

ang precaustion ko lang sa mga magpapa-undercoat. bantayan nyo maigi yung pag linis ng ilalim nyo. patanggal nyo lahat ng dumi at kalawang na makita. Useless kasi kung hindi. once na magkabreach yung undercoat nyo, the undercoat can also trap the water inside/between the metal and the coating. mas matagal exposure sa tubig, mas malala kalawang.

    yun lang po.
    bow
