Chery Philippines to start local assembly of vehicles in September

Chery Motors Philippines may have just taken over the exclusive distributorship of the Chinese-made vehicles from Chery Iseway but it's making sure that it hits the ground running by starting the local assembly of some of its models in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, later this year.

By tapping the services of Star Motor Manufacturing Industries, Chery Philippines hopes to start churning out the QQ city car and the Q-series of small vans and pickup trucks for the local market by September, Chery Philippines sales and marketing manager Raymond Tribdino said. Star Motor is in the business of contract vehicle assembly for the local market through its compact but modern assembly plant located in a six-hectare property inside the Laguna Technopark in Sta. Rosa.

Despite subcontracting the assembly of its vehicles to Star Motor, Chery Philippines is still looking to establish its own assembly plant in the country. According to Tribdino, the company has narrowed its choices down to three locations.

"We're looking at Cebu because the Visayas and Mindanao regions are some of Chery's strongest local markets," Tribdino said. "We're also looking at Pangasinan but the one location we're looking at intently is Port Irene in Cagayan."

Tribdino explained that officials from the Board of Investments and the Department of Trade and Industry are eagerly pushing Port Irene as the location for the assembly plant because, "it's a free port zone, in terms of nautical miles it's the closest to China so shipping costs would be much lower and the people in the area are already adept at handling cars off of container vans."

    Chery Motors jumpstarts Philippine operations

    By Patrick Everett Tadeo —
    11 Oct 2011

Chery Motors Philippines is adapting what it has learned from Chery Iseway Motors' experience when the latter used to be the exclusive Philippine distributor of Chery vehicles as the former slowly but surely expands its operations in the Philippines.

The first move would be to abandon the thinking that a dealership has to be big for it to sell cars which is why Chery Taft-Manila, one of the first dealerships to open under Chery Motors Philippines, is small with a showroom floor area of just 200 sq. meters. Chery Motors Philippines, a subsidiary of Chery Automobiles, officially took over the local distributorship of the Chinese car brand from Iseway Motors in January 2011.

The second move is to be more involved with the operations of its dealerships. For new dealerships, Chery Motors Philippines will be hands-on in its operations for the first three months to teach the dealerships' personnel the ropes on how to operate a dealership before it's turned over to them. According to Chery Motors Philippines sales and marketing manager Raymond Tribdino, this measure protects first-time dealers from the pitfalls of running a car dealership without any experience.

The most important move of Chery Motors Philippines, however, is that the local assembly of Chery vehicles could begin before the year ends.

Last June, Chery Motors Philippines had subcontracted the services of Star Motor Manufacturing Industries to assemble its vehicles at Star Motor's plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna. With both Chery Motors Philippines and Star Motors recently signing the Technical Licensing Agreement, it's only a matter of time before the very first Philippine-made Chery vehicles roll off of the assembly line.

"Once we have all the equipment we need, we'll produce a couple of pre-production units and if this passes the necessary tests and requirements, we hope to start production before year-end," said Tribdino who shared that he will supervise the production of the vehicles once this starts.

Tribdino added that the two vehicles planned for Philippine production are the A1 subcompact hatchback and the V2 compact MPV. Both vehicles will also be compliant to Euro-4 emission standards. The QQ, on the other hand, is cheaper to import than to assemble locally.

"Our cooperation with Star Motors which took almost 2 years to finalize, will assure the Filipino car buyer that the product quality of the vehicles will be more suitable to the Philippine road and weather conditions, as well as allow us to make the products suitable to the tastes of the Filipino buyer," said Chery Motors Philippines president and chief executive Si-Chung Chang. "I believe that things are looking good for Chery. And that the season is right for the blossoming of the Chery brand once again in the Philippines."

Chery firms up plans to put up a local assembly plant

    20 May 2011

Senior executives from Chery Automobile Company recently paid a visit to the Board of Investments (BOI) to convey the Chinese carmaker's intent to put up an assembly plant in the Philippines within the next five years "to serve the burgeoning left-hand drive market in the ASEAN region."

Led by Chery vice president for Asia Pacific Meng Tao, the executives were accompanied by officials of the newly-established Chery Motors Philippines, Inc. (CMPI) to inform the BOI managing head, undersecretary Crisanto Panlilio, that the carmaker is currently scouting for an assembly-plant location.

"Part of our five-year plan with our new Philippine partner is to set up local assembly, starting with small-volume production and then proceed to a bigger scale, which means exporting to the other countries in the region including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia where cars are driven from the left-hand side," said Tao.

CMPI president and chief executive Si-Chung Chang echoed that Chery Automobile's plan is aligned with his company's own five-year plan. In addition, Chang relayed that CMPI is eager to start off its initial production before year-end with a local partner and that two compact Chery models are being eyed for the project.

"It will take time but the focus of our energies is the re-establishment of the Chery brand in the Philippines on the long term. We need to take it one step at a time and build up to each step. The assembly plant caps this long term plan," Chang added.

CMPI was established in January 2011 after it formally took over the distribution of the Chery brand of vehicles from Chery Iseway Motors.
