yes imm29 is right, it's the viscosity of the oil that matters. when the engine temperature rises the viscosity of oil changes. sabi nila ang viscosity ng synthetic oil has no significant change in extreme heat, so madulas pa rin kahit mainit na mainit na ang makina unlike the mineral oil. kaya kung karerista ka and you are using mineral oil medyo hirap ang makina ng kotse mo. in additon, synthetic oil doesn't burn easily kaya matagal ang palitan.

just for clarification, is it really true na ang viscosity ng synthetic oil has no significant change in extreme heat, madulas pa rin kahit mainit na mainit na ang makina unlike the mineral oil? this is the reason im hesitant to use synthetic oil. im using castrol crb 20-40W and would like to shift to petron rev-x but has lower viscosity at 5-30W. ok lang ba mag shift?

well I think that Synthetic Oil would switch to its higher viscosity when the engine is at its highest temperature. thats why there are multi-viscosity weights, for ex: 10w30,10w40, 20w50.. and so on. also, Synthetic Oil will react better in extreme heat and it stays "slick" (or madulas).. not unlike Mineral Oil, na pag mainit na ang temp.. specially on long periods of time, nagiging parang tubig na lang siya (like hindi madulas.. basa lang, parang tubig.).
so mas maganda pa rin ang Synthetic Oil, specially for hard working engines that always see's high operating temperatures and runs at higher RPM's. Synthetic Oil will stick better on engine rotating assemblies (main & rod bearings, piston rings, valvetrain components, etc..) kaya kung mapapansin niyo na mas kumakapit sa bakal (for example: Cylinder walls, bearings..) ang Synthetic Oil kumpara sa Mineral Oil.
also, I think you'd be better off using the Castrol 20w40. specially for hotter temperatures. also, going down to a 5w30 oil is really a bad idea (since 5w30 is much thinner.. and doesnt perform very well in extreme heat)
anywayz, in my honest opinion. I think youll be OK using EITHER Synthetic or Mineral oil. pag stock lang ang makina and hindi lagi nasa higher RPM range.. then stick to Mineral oil (but always change oil every 3K miles). vice versa naman din sa Synthetic oil.. although pwede naman din gamitin ang Synthetic oil sa mga stock engines. ang ma ge-gain lang by using Synthetic oil are: extended Oil Change intervals (tumatagal to almost 10K miles ang Synthetic Oil.. on normal engine operations) and of course, mas maganda ang performance and protection na mabibigay ng Synthetic Oil, lalo na sa mga performance engines (High Compression & Turbocharged)
aite, peace.

Regular drivers are not race drivers naman on the road. How do we define Etreme Heat when it comes to engines?

actually, extreme heat can be produced by hot weather (of course.. coz you add up the hot outside temperature to the under hood engine temps.. will equate to more extreme heat inside the engine bay).
also, long periods of Idling.. bumper to bumper / stop & go traffic will also cause extreme heat to the engine (and more wear on internal engine parts).

Sirs, curious lang po, what would happen if you are currently using fully synthetic oil, then merong ibang gumamit, nilagyan ng mineral oil? Say 10w30 synthetic oil nilagyan ng 20w50 mineral oil to top off. What will happen?

Just asking..
Di ba dapat nakadesign ang makina na kahit stop and go and under hot weather, hindi dapat mag over heat? Kung nag over heat under these conditions, may problem ang cooling system. Tama ba?
Akala ko, extreme heat ay generated pag almost nasa red line ang makina. Sa dami ng gas na nasusunog, mataas ang heat generated.

saken nung 1K synth then nung 5K, 10K, 15K mineral oil na lang.. ok naman..
that may be, but we all got plastic, young and old. we asked the lto guy, "papel ba po, o...
