That's odd ... barring the possibility that both your lock barrels are faulty, you should be able to unlock the car even with a dead battery.

Baka naman hindi mo pinipihit nang husto? Normally when you turn the key in one direction, the doors will lock. Turn it past this point and it will double-lock. Turn it a bit more and it will synchronize the central locking system ... hold it there until you hear all actuators (including the trunk) engage. That is, if you have a working battery.

When you turn the key in the other direction, it should unlock. Turn it past this point and and you will engage the emergency unlock. This emergency unlock is for times of total electrical failure - like what happened to your car.

In either direction (from the 12 o'clock position to the sync or emergency unlock position) your key should have turned more than 90 degrees.

I've read a lot of complaints from E32/E34 owners about the cars' poor headlight ... sakit yata. First of all - be very careful when handling the reflector, if you want to clean it. Even mild cleaners may be too strong for its chrome-plating.

Due to its age, you may want to have your wirings checked, including the connectors and relay. If the voltage drop between the battery and the headlight is too much, you may want to consider having an extra relay wired-in and use higher-powered bulbs (note: more than 55/60w is illegal in some countries). It's basically bypassing the old relay and headlight wiring with new and thicker wiring (without taking out the old ones, which I'm sure will be too troublesome).

Or use better bulbs like Philips Vision Plus (+50%) or Osram Silverstar (+50%). If you can find the new ones, there's the Philips X-Treme Power (+80%) and Osram Nightbreaker (+90%).
