depends on your engine. check your user's manual for the optimal oil weight to be used in your car.
for example, the the rav4 1.8L 1zz-fe engine's optimal oil is a 5w-30. while the rav4 2.0L 1az-fe engine's optimal oil is 10w-40.
to determine your the optimal oil, check which oil has the broadest / widest coverage of temperatures. though you can safely rule off temperatures of below 0 deg C here in our country.
i'd go for 5w30 or 10w50 if available. mainit dito kaya di syado recommended low viscosity oil afaik.
Mazdamazda, My ride is an altis 1.6 3zz-fe. Im planning to get Mobil1 Supersyn 0w-40 or Castrol Syntec 5w-30. Dont know which of the two is better. Both will be Fully Synthetic in nature.
Which will you choose?
Aside from what was mentioned above, you can ask what the toyota dealers use for synthetic oil. Think the toyota synth oil is a 5w40.
My suggestion is to use a 5w40 or 5w50 or 10w30 full synth. Don't think castrol Syntec is a true "full synth" oil based on comments from the oil forums.
5w-30 a full synthetic? better check it out... it might be a semi-synth only.Originally Posted by hytan
if you want better gas consumption - i'd go with the 5w-30. i think that the zz series engine is designed to handle 5w-30 (unlike the az series).
but if you plan on keeping your ride for a LONG time, go with the mobil1 0w-40 (what am using right now). toyota shaw-ortigas uses that kind of full-synth oil.
I'll be using Mobil1 sa ZZ engine ko. Mas may tiwala ako kay Mobil1 0W-40 rather than Havoline Energy 5W-30 because im planning to use my car a long time.
Here's some excellent accurate information about oil:

I would recommended Mobil 1 "0w-40".
Here are some mobil 1 product data sheets:
5w50:

0w40:

Note the higher HTHS figure(high temp, high shear) of the 5w50 mix
