To be safe, do it with the key out and preferably with negative terminal of battery disconnected.
Its normal for your ignition coil to become hot. Its basically a transformer so heat is generated by the electrical wirings. But if its excesively hot then that might be something else.
If oil is leaking from your ignition coil, replace it. Leaving the key in ignition will also cause your ignition coil to heat up and fail.
