AUV was originally a class designated in the local market for a vehicle that is[usually based off a compact pick up], single axle drive [not 4x4], closed wagon capable of carrying at least 10 persons.

During this time, SUV's were also slapped with a hefty tax. Hence the appearance of SUV's which are 'AUVs on paper'. They simply deleted the 4x4 system and claimed to have been able to seat 10 persons. They are for all intents and purposes, SUV's but were being taxed only as AUVs. Examples of this were the GEN II CR-V, Trooper 4x2, Pajero 4x2, Patrol 4x2, Expedition 4x2, etc.

Tax laws have since changed and the 10 seat capacity is no longer enforced.

Most AUV's are also developed specifically for the Asian market. Hence the 'A' in AUV.

The Sportage is a crossover [car-based] SUV.
