imo, and not to flame our opel owners, mag-second hand bmw ka na lang. parts of bmw can be had even outside the casa (Basics, Mikes Parts, etc...), so you are not held hostaged by the dealerships. my 0.02 cents
Opel Astra 1.6 - underpowered and interior space is too cramped. Backseat leg space is too small, a corolla ae101 has a lot more leg room. Suspension is a bit on the stiff side, if its a pro or con depends on your taste.
An older model BMW 316 would be a better buy if you are after something european.
I'd go with an older Benz or Bimmer over a brand new Astra. Not that I don't like it. Mas mura lang ang maintenance ng MB at BM and you get to look classier to boot! hehehe.

hearsay lang from my friends who had them.....
Sell yours before the waranty expires!!!!
Had two friends with vectras and they had to have major repairs (casa only ofcourse) weeks after the warranty expired.
Also had another friend who had an Astra. He didn't like it either for several reasons and sold it in less than a year.
My brother owned an Opel Astra... sold it after less than two years of owning it. Even if it was a wagon version, it didn't have much more cargo space & legroom than a typical sedan.
thanks again for the replies...kaso hindi pa rin natin na elaborate kung bakit pangit ang opel astra....para ma enlighten naman ang mga listeners... este readers natin out there..
kung bakit?... for the same money, you can find other much much much better cars.
I think the website of motioncars has a detailed review of the Astra. Let me tell you, from what I remember, it ain't good. ghosthunter said it right...for that amount of money, you can buy better cars.
Follow-up lang. Here's the site:

Hope this helps.
We have an Astra & all I can say is okay naman siya, nothing spectacular, nothing too fancy. Kaya lang namin binili yun kasi mura siya for a European car (P848k ata), we acquired it 12/2001.
Pros:
-I like the build quality, feels solid. You get the thud when you close the doors that you associate with European cars (MBs, Bimmers)
-Driver's seating position. I like the way you sit up high and the adjustments that can be made to the steering wheel. Audio controls are on the steering wheel, at least you don't have to take your hand away from the wheel.
-Mura siya for a European car
-The ride is okay, but siguro kase bago pa siya. But some people might find it too stiff.
Cons:
-Engine is UNDERPOWERED, my AE101 is way faster!
-Medyo malayo yung shifter niya for me, at matigas
-I don't like the front passenger seat's headrest, sasakit ulo mo if you want to sleep
-The legroom at the back poses problem if you're 5'7" up
-Hindi ata pwede palitan ang HU ng aftermarket unit
Correct if I'm wrong though. Just my 2 cents
For the same money, we would have gotten the current CRV if it had come out earlier...pero imho, iba pa rin ang German car
...and Vectras are the real lemons! I've seen a '99-'00 Vectra selling for less than P500K at a used car lot, 20-30K+ lang ata yung mileage
Just my 2 cents :D
gusto ko sa Opel Astra:
-fully galvanized body...may warranty pa yata sila para dito
-automatic power windows for all doors
-with double lock feature
-may defogger (tama ba term) ang side mirrors (kailangan na kailangan talaga ito during rainy season)
-reasonably priced German car
dislikes:
-underpowered
-sobrang tagal daw bago dumating ang parts kapag nasiraan ka...maswerte ka na rin kapag nakakuha ka sa labas
-bagsak resale value
another cons is that yung battery yata ng astra kailangan imported, kapag motolite yata ndi gagana, narinig ko lang ito sa sabi ng ibang tao...
hmmm whats weird is that the opel astra wagon of my friends uncle also hasnt encountered all those prblems ... nakausap k yung uncle nya e asked about the car ok naman daw lahat lahat etc etc wla daw nasisira etc as in 0 reklamo siya ha ... swertihan ba to?
well before i got my first car, i also considered getting an astra kasi before parang iba dating e german etc etc tska kakaiba from the civics ng mga kabarkada ko ..tpos after further thinking and opinions from owners i ended up buying an altis .... i think good decision naman![]()
Call Thunder Automotive Parts in Manila for Opel parts. They supply the different casas so you'll get a good deal. Look for Coleman and their number is 244-7701 & 244-6529.
Battery is AC-Delco and cost less than 4K with 2 year warranty.
i recently purchased a 2000 opel astra wagon. it is a bit on the slow side but who needs speed in manila traffic. i am happy with my purchase. the car looks elegant. rides really solid. has additional features like closing windows with the turn of the key while outside the car...that was new for me...hehehe.
maintenance costs would be maybe 20 to 30% more than a japanese car...
there is also a store in banawe that specializes in opel parts...fronte yata ang name...
anyway my only complaint is the radio...it came with a tuner and cassette player...
here's the number of fronte for all opel owners...7210919
dropped by there last week just to check prices...reasonable naman
and they said they have all the major parts of the astra now....
